Toyota’s sports car lineup has expanded in recent years with models like the 86 and the Supra, all carrying the GR badge. But now, Toyota Gazoo Racing (GR) might be looking to add more types of vehicles to its lineup. Tomoya Takahashi, the president of Toyota GR, spoke to Australian media about the possibility of high-performance SUVs joining the GR family.

Takashi noted that some people need SUVs because they have families, suggesting that there’s a demand for high-performance SUVs. While Lexus is rumored to be working on a high-performance crossover called the LBX, Toyota might follow suit with its own version. However, so far, only SUVs with the GR Sport badge have been released, offering some off-road enhancements and styling changes.

Currently, Toyota GR is working on various projects, including a rumored V8 sports car and a potential GR-tuned Prius. Takahashi mentioned that the division has limited resources and needs to focus on current projects before expanding further. He hinted that an SUV could be in the works for the future but didn’t provide specific details.

While there are rumors about a GR HiLux pickup truck, Takahashi clarified that only a GR Sport variant would be offered. It’s unclear exactly what high-performance vehicles Toyota GR has in store, but former Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda will continue to be involved, which suggests exciting developments ahead.
