Toyota is taking the powerful V8 engine from the Lexus IS 500 and putting it into a racing version of the GR Supra, but it’s not for regular street use.

This V8-powered Supra will compete in the Repco Supercars Championship, an intense racing series in Australia known for close, high-speed battles on tough road circuits. Toyota’s race car will use the same 5.0-liter V8 engine found in Lexus models, which typically produces 472 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, but the race version will likely have more power.

Although it’s a race car, the V8 Supra will still resemble the regular GR Supra in many ways, using a body shell similar to what you can buy.

Four V8 Supras will be part of the racing series, with a top team called Walkinshaw Andretti United running two of them. While there’s no plan for a street version of this V8 Supra, there’s a slim chance Toyota could celebrate the car’s success with a limited release in the future.

The competition will be fierce, with the Supra going up against the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, both equipped with powerful V8 engines. Initially, Toyota considered using a six-cylinder engine to match the regular Supra but quickly decided the V8 was a better fit for this high-stakes racing series.
