Volkswagen is recalling around 80,000 ID.4 electric vehicles because screens in certain models are turning off unexpectedly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says this problem can happen in different ways. Sometimes, it makes the rearview camera disappear, and other times, it makes the speedometer vanish. But don’t worry, other Volkswagen models like the ID.7 electric sedan are not affected.
The NHTSA’s safety recall report says that only about one percent of the recalled vehicles actually have this problem, even though many are being recalled. Newer ID.4 models are not part of this recall because they already have updated software.
If your ID.4 is part of the recall, you’ll get a letter in the mail around July 12. The good news is, fixing this problem is easy. Dealers will install a software update to solve it.
When screens go black unexpectedly, it can be dangerous. If the rearview camera disappears, it’s hard to see what’s behind you, especially when backing up. And if the speedometer disappears, you won’t know how fast you’re going, which can also lead to accidents.
This isn’t the first problem the ID.4 has faced. Before, the NHTSA looked into reports of its doors popping open while driving, but there hasn’t been an official recall for that issue yet. There was also a recall for water leaking through the doors, and another one for a charging cable that could catch fire. Last year, there was even a recall for the sunshade, which also had a risk of catching fire.
