FWD, RWD, awd and 4wd: terms that matter with cars

Buying a car is a daunting job when you don't understand half the things you're looking for...

And that naturally includes the drivetrain.

SO FIRST THING'S FIRST

WHAT ARE DRIVETRAINS

?

Drivetrains are the system in a car which connects the transmission of the vehicle to the driven axles.

AND THERE'S MORE THAN ONE TYPE

A Front-Wheel-Drive (FWD) vehicle basically means that the front wheels on this car do all the actual work.

A Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD) on the other hand, transmits all the power into the back wheels. Most race-cars have these.

RWD

All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) is not to be confused with 4WD. The difference is slight but crucial. This type of drivetrain is best for slippery roads.

A Four-Wheel-Drive (4WD) transmits power to all four wheels at all times. This car is best for off-road ventures like mud and sand.
