Elizabeth Hurley has received flak from fans who think she endangered the lives of a pair of starfish while posing with them for an Instagram holiday photo.

After discovering the impressive-sized critters "abandoned" on the sand, the Austin Powers actress, 56, told her fans how she "rescued" them.

"Found these gorgeous starfish, alive but stranded, on the sand – they're now happily back at the bottom of the sea," Ms Hurley captioned the photo.

However, according to World Animal Protection, touching or removing a starfish from the sea could cause them to suffocate.

"If these starfish were stranded on the beach, PETA applauds Liz Hurley for trying to help," a PETA representative said.

"However, we must caution people not to pick these animals up in the water, where they live," they warned.

Others, on the other hand, weren't pleased with her post and were quick to criticise her in the comments section.

Professor Morgan Pratchett of James Cook University's marine biology department believes the starfish in issue is the Red Cushion Sea Star (Oreaster reticulatus).
