The electrification wave sweeping through various industries has reached the aviation sector, prompting the U.S. Air Force (USAF) to explore electric aircraft’s potential. In collaboration with industry partners, the USAF initiated a series of evaluations to assess electric aviation’s feasibility for military applications.

Pilots and commanders from the 96th Test Wing experienced electric flight firsthand with joyrides in the Pipistrel Velis Electro, the world’s first certified electric-powered aircraft. Despite its unconventional appearance, the Velis Electro demonstrated electric propulsion capabilities, providing valuable insights for future electric aircraft integration.

The Velis Electro’s single electric motor delivers 77 horsepower, enabling altitudes up to 12,000 feet and speeds of 113 mph. Pilots provided qualitative evaluations of their flight experiences, guiding the USAF’s exploration of electric aviation’s potential benefits and challenges.

The USAF’s commitment to electric aviation extends beyond joyrides, with plans to evaluate additional electric aircraft throughout the year. As electric aircraft technology advances, the USAF remains at the forefront of innovation, positioning itself for future challenges and opportunities.
