Although Matt MacVittie is not yet well-known in the motorcycle customizing industry, his ambitious ideas show great potential. Operating from his humble backyard shed in North Carolina under the banner of MacVittie Motorcycles, Matt’s creations never fail to fascinate. Armed with a background in engineering, he adeptly marries form and function to craft spectacular one-off machines.

Currently boasting eight fully realized builds, his latest creation, dubbed “Cosmic,” centers around a 1974 Yamaha XS650. A darling of the custom bike world, the XS platform’s versatility has endeared it to countless builders, including Matt, who has a penchant for Japanese machinery. Specializing in cafe racer styling, Matt’s Cosmic exemplifies his creative prowess and technical acumen.

However, the journey to Cosmic’s fruition was far from smooth. Initially, the XS650 arrived in disarray, its components strewn across multiple boxes. Undeterred, Matt started on a comprehensive overhaul, beginning with a bespoke loop-style subframe to replace the irreparable original.

The rear underwent extensive modification, featuring a full monoshock conversion for added dynamism. Crafting a new tubular swingarm and integrating premium Hyperpro suspension further enhanced Cosmic’s performance.

Noteworthy modifications at the front included the incorporation of a 1972 Suzuki GT750 drum brake and aftermarket suspension enhancements. Bridgestone Battlax BT46 rubber ensured ample grip, while a bespoke stainless-steel exhaust system added a touch of bespoke flair.

The transformation extended to Cosmic’s aesthetics, with a blend of off-white and black hues adorning the bodywork. Details like leather seating with diamond stitching, clip-on handlebars, and aftermarket instrumentation completed the cockpit. Matt’s meticulous attention to detail and relentless pursuit of perfection culminated in Cosmic—a testament to his mastery of the craft.
