Just as winter transitions to spring, the unveiling of a new Mercedes-Benz model is often succeeded by the emergence of a more potent AMG variant. Within a year of introducing the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE-class, slated to supplant the two-door iterations of the C-class and E-class, Mercedes-AMG has officially confirmed the advent of the CLE53, an enhanced version of the CLE.

In numerical alignment, the CLE53 coupe is positioned between the 402-horsepower C43 sedan and the formidable 677-horsepower C63. Unlike its counterparts, which rely on a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with varying degrees of hybrid support, the CLE distinguishes itself with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine.

Generating 443 horsepower, this powerplant incorporates a 48-volt hybrid system to amplify performance at lower engine speeds. According to Mercedes, this setup propels the CLE53 from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, reaching a top speed of 155 mph. However, anticipating swifter acceleration, considering the C43 achieved a 0-60 mph time of just 3.9 seconds in our tests.

Mercedes-AMG has undertaken significant enhancements to this iteration of the inline-six engine. The combustion chambers undergo optimization with redesigned inlet and outlet channels, new piston rings, and a new turbocharger. Collaborating with an electric auxiliary compressor, the turbo can elevate boost pressure to 22 psi and activate an over-boost function for up to 12 seconds.

Equipped with Mercedes’ rear-biased 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, the CLE53 features a nine-speed automatic transmission with a clutch pack and rear-wheel steering. Standard 19-inch wheels can be upgraded to an optional 20-inch.

Visually, the CLE53’s rear maintains a resemblance to the standard CLE class, with subtle distinctions like badging and a wider rear track. An optional AMG Performance Studio package introduces enhancements to the front and rear fascia, along with a spoiler lip and rear diffuser board.

The front of the CLE53 undergoes more pronounced changes, characterized by a more aggressive hood, an AMG-styled front bumper, and a grille, imbuing the vehicle with a more assertive aesthetic. The front fenders are widened by 2.3 inches, and the rear fenders are by a substantial 3.0 inches compared to the standard CLE coupe.

Inside, the CLE53 features a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and an 11.9-inch central display, mirroring the standard coupe. Standard seat upholstery comprises MB-Tex and microfiber, with an option to upgrade to Nappa leather featuring embossed AMG crests in the front headrests.

An available AMG Performance Seat Package replaces standard buckets with seats boasting more pronounced bolsters, while the regular steering wheel is swapped for a flat-bottom AMG steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather, accompanied by aluminum shift paddles.

While Mercedes has not disclosed the CLE53’s release date, it is anticipated to debut next year, with an estimated price falling between the C43 and C63 models, likely around $85,000 upon release.
