This Tank-Tracked Nissan X-Trail Is Ready For Mountain Rescue Duty

If you’re a mountain rescue worker who has a fondness for SUVs, you might be facing a challenge in finding a vehicle that meets your needs. Even the most capable 4x4s often lack the specialized capabilities required for rapid response rescue services in treacherous terrains. However, Nissan may have a solution tailored just for you.

The Japanese manufacturer has a history of equipping unexpected vehicles with tank tracks, having previously done so with a Juke and even a 370Z. While those instances were more of playful experiments, the X-Trail we’re discussing here has been meticulously customized for serious mountain rescue applications.

This specially outfitted X-Trail distinguishes itself from its tracked predecessors by connecting those treads to the two electric motors of the SUV’s powertrain, as opposed to relying solely on an internal combustion engine. Nissan claims that this configuration allows the vehicle to respond to changes in grip approximately 1000 times faster than a traditional system, a crucial advantage in the unpredictable snowy conditions of mountainous terrain.

The modifications go beyond the addition of tank tracks. A custom roof rack designed to accommodate a stretcher and snow shovels has been installed, along with a siren and an LED lightbar. The bumpers have been reinforced, boasting tow hooks, and a front-mounted winch has been incorporated. The overall aesthetic is completed with Rocket Bunny-esque wide wheel arches.

In order to make room for essential rescue equipment, the rear seats have been removed and replaced with a stretcher. Additional features include radios and a Garmin display. However, before you get too eager to allocate your mountain rescue funds for this specialized X-Trail, it’s worth noting that Nissan currently has no plans to offer this as a conversion or put this particular show car into practical use. Instead, it will be showcased at a resort in Cervinia, Italy.
