Winning the Dakar Rally stands as an elusive dream for many drivers across the globe, a feat accomplished by only a select few. The achievement necessitates not only skill and fortune but also the unwavering support of a formidable team, exemplified by Toyota’s success with Nasser Al Attiyah securing three Touareg trophies in the past six editions.

In a strategic move, the Japanese manufacturer, now without the Qatari driver, has opted for a youthful approach, turning to a promising talent who left an indelible mark in his debut year in the top category of the grueling race—the Brazilian Lucas Moraes, who clinched the third position amidst a field of racing legends.

When asked about the honor of representing the esteemed Toyota Gazoo Racing team and stepping into the shoes of a five-time Dakar Rally champion like Nasser Al Attiyah, Moraes expressed, “It’s an honor to represent this team. Toyota Gazoo Racing is one of the best if not the best, teams. To be in Nasser’s shoes is a big responsibility, but I know that nobody can ever replace Nasser. He’s a five-time [Dakar Rally] champion and one of the best on the grid. But it’s an honor to try my best and give the team good results.”

Reflecting on the pivotal moment of securing his first stage win during the 2024 edition’s opening week, Moraes acknowledged, “We won a stage, which was impressive.”

The Brazilian driver shed light on the intriguing circumstances that led to his inclusion in the team, revealing, “The talks came with the news that Nasser was leaving the team, and they started after the result of last year’s Dakar. When I got the call from Alain [Dujardyn, Toyota director], it was a dream come true.”

Moraes, conscious of his role in Brazilian motorsport, emphasized the significance of representing his country on the podium, stating, “Last year when we got the podium, it was an honor to represent the country because it had never been done before. I was able to do it, and this week too, because we won the third stage and I received a lot of messages, so it’s nice to represent this flag and to keep doing it like this.”

Collaborating with co-driver Armand Monleon, Moraes acknowledged the invaluable assistance provided by the experienced Spaniard, describing him as one of the best co-drivers. Praising Monleon’s technical expertise and precision in navigation, Moraes highlighted the importance of their strong partnership in building confidence.

Acknowledging the indispensable support from Sparco, Moraes expressed gratitude for the sponsorship from the iconic motorsport brand. Emphasizing the quality and comfort of Sparco’s Future line, which includes gloves, overalls, and boots, Moraes recognized the brand’s role in providing essential gear for his rides. “It’s very good to have the sponsorship of an iconic brand in motorsport. They provide me with everything from the racing suits to the underwear we use,” he said.

Endorsing Sparco products, Moraes lauded the comfort and quality of the racing suits, expressing satisfaction with their versatility. When asked if he would recommend Sparco products to fellow Dakar Rally participants, Moraes wholeheartedly endorsed them, specifically highlighting the exceptional comfort of the overalls and underwear. “Yes, of course, the Sparco products are the best I’ve ever had, and I recommend them. I like the overalls, and also the underwear we use. It’s very, very comfortable, so it’s very good.”
