The F1 driver market saw a significant shift with Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected move to Ferrari, leaving a seat vacant at Mercedes and sparking speculation about Fernando Alonso’s potential involvement.
Alonso has indicated that his priority lies with Aston Martin as he contemplates his future in Formula 1. However, before making any decisions, he must determine if he intends to continue racing in 2025.
“If I decide to continue racing, I’ll explore the available options,” Alonso stated. “My foremost consideration will always be discussions with Aston Martin.”
He expressed gratitude towards Aston Martin for providing him with the opportunity to join the team last year and emphasized his pride in being part of their setup. The prospect of a promising future with the team, especially with the development of a new factory, is enticing to him.
Approaching his 43rd birthday in July, Alonso acknowledged the need for careful consideration regarding his long-term commitment to the sport.
“There are several phases I need to navigate,” he explained. “Firstly, I must decide whether I’m willing to dedicate more years of my life to this beloved sport. Despite my passion for F1, I enjoy driving in various disciplines, including DTM, rally, and go-karts. If not F1, I’d find contentment in other forms of motorsport, potentially allowing more time for my personal life, which holds importance at this stage.”
Alonso emphasized the importance of making a definitive decision regarding his future and committing fully to a team. He expressed confidence in Aston Martin’s project and highlighted the progress made together in the past year.
Should negotiations with Aston Martin not yield an agreement, Alonso recognizes his attractiveness to other teams based on his performance and experience.
“If I am to continue racing in F1 and cannot secure a deal with Aston Martin, I’m aware of my appeal to other teams,” he admitted. “Last year’s performance and commitment make me a desirable asset. With only three world champions on the grid and just one available seat, there’s certainly interest.”
Regarding age as a potential barrier, Alonso believes he still has physical capabilities for a few more years. However, the willingness to maintain the demanding workload of F1 could be a deciding factor.
“In the past, the perception was that around 40 to 41 was the limit,” he noted. “But my recent experiences have challenged that notion. If one remains motivated and committed, driving into one’s late 40s or even 50s is conceivable. However, the sacrifices required for F1, the total dedication, may become increasingly challenging as one explores other interests in life.”
Alonso reflected on his 24-year journey in F1, acknowledging the dedication it demands. While he remains open to the possibility of continuing for a few more years, he recognizes the need to balance his racing ambitions with other aspects of life.
