NASCAR explains timing of race-ending caution in Daytona 500

As the final lap of the Daytona 500 was poised to commence, Ross Chastain’s daring maneuver through the middle saw him and Austin Cindric spinning into the infield.

In the aftermath, NASCAR deliberated momentarily, ultimately electing to wave the caution flag as Cindric’s car veered back onto the track. By NASCAR regulations, a caution flag unfurled during the final lap signifies a frozen field, effectively concluding the race.

Amidst the unfolding drama, Alex Bowman, who had been providing the push for Chastain’s pivotal surge, capitalized on the momentum, drawing level with his Hendrick Motorsports compatriot as the caution unfurled. Following widespread speculation, NASCAR took to social media to clarify the sequence of events.

Mike Forde, the managing director of racing communications for NASCAR, provided insights, stating, “NASCAR employs all available resources during crucial moments. Here’s an aerial photograph captured at the time of caution. Note the No. 2 car [Cindric] returning to the racetrack. This prompted the call for caution. Ideally, we had hoped it would have stayed low on the apron like the No. 1 car [Chastain] did, allowing the race to conclude under green.”

Bowman, displaying unwavering support for NASCAR’s decision, expressed pride in his teammate William Byron, remarking, “They truly earned it at the end. They executed flawlessly, and I believe we did our part as well. We had to move up and block the top lane, which temporarily stalled the middle. We managed to regain momentum in the middle, but then the crashes ensued.

“I commend everyone on the No. 48 Ally Chevy team. It’s a momentous day for Hendrick Motorsports—40 years since its inaugural race, and witnessing William’s triumph in victory lane is truly special. It’s been a fruitful day for our Ally Camaro too.”
