Debuting in 1958, the Chevrolet Impala enjoyed continuous production until 1985, with a hiatus until its revival in 1994. The sixth-generation model, introduced in 1977, stands out for several reasons.

Arriving during a shift in the automotive market towards smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, the sixth-gen Impala underwent significant downsizing.

It was shorter, narrower, and had a reduced wheelbase compared to its predecessor, yet retained a boxy design and offered elegant two-tone paint options. In terms of engines, the sixth-gen Impala no longer offered big-block powerplants, instead focusing on small-block engines and introducing a V6 option.

Notably, it also marked the debut of the LF9 diesel V8 engine, derived from the Oldsmobile 350 gasoline engine architecture.

While the LF9 initially found success, powering various GM vehicles and capturing a significant share of the US passenger car diesel market, it was plagued by numerous issues and lawsuits, ultimately leading to its discontinuation in 1985 due to its damaging impact on the reputation of diesel engines in North America.

Despite the controversies surrounding the LF9, the diesel V8 engine in the showcased 1981 Impala is reported to be in excellent running condition, boasting impressive fuel efficiency.

However, the seller’s lack of engine photos adds an element of uncertainty to the auction listing, which currently stands at a high bid of $4,350 in a no-reserve auction set to expire in three days.
