Unleashing Performance Upgraded Brakes and Tires Transform the Subaru BRZ Experience

Enhancing the Subaru BRZ’s performance potential doesn’t always require a hefty investment. With a strategic upgrade to its brakes and tires, our long-term 2023 Limited model underwent a remarkable transformation, elevating its capabilities on both the test track and real-world roads.

Priced at approximately $2100, the modifications delivered tangible improvements, notably in grip and stopping power. Swapping out the stock Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer tires for the Bridgestone Potenza Race tires, sized slightly wider at 225/40R-18, proved to be a game-changer.

Despite not being Bridgestone’s ultimate performance tire, the Potenza Race offered remarkable grip and durability, enhancing the BRZ’s overall handling dynamics without compromising its balance.

Complementing the tire upgrade, we installed track-oriented Carbotech XP12 brake pads and new OE brake rotors, coupled with high-temperature Castrol React SRF Racing DOT4 fluid.

While the setup delivered impressive braking performance, reducing stopping distances significantly, it came with trade-offs such as a slightly stiffer ride and noticeable brake noise, particularly in urban settings.

However, the benefits of these enhancements became evident during rigorous testing. On the skidpad, the BRZ achieved a remarkable 1.01 g of grip, showcasing a notable improvement from its initial effort. Similarly, in stopping tests from 70 and 100 mph, the Subaru exhibited significant gains, halting at 143 and 285 feet, respectively.

These upgrades truly came into their own at the Virginia International Raceway’s Grand Course, where the BRZ shaved an impressive 3.1 seconds off its lap time. Despite the enhanced performance, the car’s playful demeanor remained intact, with drivers noting improved agility and responsiveness across all track sectors.

While the introduction of the 2024 BRZ tS model offers upgraded suspension and Brembo brakes as factory options, existing BRZ owners can achieve similar enhancements through aftermarket upgrades.

Our experience underscores the profound impact that a few key modifications can have on transforming the driving experience of one of our favorite driver’s cars.
