When discussing station wagons from the mid-1950s, the Chevrolet Tri-Five often steals the spotlight as an iconic representation of that era. Renowned for its distinctive design, especially in its range-topping Bel Air Nomad guise, the Tri-Five remains a highly coveted gem among enthusiasts.

However, overshadowed by the Nomad’s fame, Pontiac introduced its own stylish and luxurious offering in the form of the Safari. Debuting in 1955 on the same A-body chassis as the Nomad, the Safari shared its exterior sheet metal with the Chieftain. Despite this resemblance, Pontiac positioned it within the Star Chief series due to its shorter wheelbase, officially dubbing it the Star Chief Custom Safari.

As Pontiac’s flagship station wagon, the Safari commanded a premium price tag, surpassing even the Nomad in terms of cost. Unlike its Chevrolet counterpart, which was exclusively available in a two-door configuration, the first-generation Safari also offered a four-door variant in 1957, known as the Transcontinental.

Although the Safari nameplate endured until 1989, the two-door version was phased out in 1958. Pontiac subsequently introduced Safari variants based on both the Chieftain and the Star Chief, albeit not achieving the same level of desirability as the initial iteration. Despite this, the 1958 Safari remains a rare find, with only 2,905 units produced.

Like most station wagons from the 1950s, the 1958 Safari is more commonly seen in junkyards than on public roads. However, fortunate exceptions like the showcased black example, discovered in the arid environment of Wyoming, have been salvaged and revitalized by enthusiasts.

Resurrected by the skilled craftsmen at MetalWorks Speed Shop, this Safari underwent a restomod transformation, blending traditional features with modern elements. With its lowered stance, modern wheels, and an updated interior featuring contemporary gauges while retaining original upholstery, this Safari seamlessly combines classic charm with modern performance.

Under the hood, the original 370-cubic-inch V8 engine remains, albeit enhanced with modern EFI technology, delivering a substantial power boost. While purists may prefer all-original restorations, this restomod Safari is sure to turn heads and ignite excitement among enthusiasts.
