In late 2023, the fifth-generation Santa Fe for the model year 2024 faced its first recall in the United States market. Hyundai Motor America filed documents with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, citing a software error potentially obstructing the rearview camera image with a Trailer Parking Assist message.

The issue stemmed from the rearview camera system’s software logic, causing a CAN communication error when shifting into reverse.

Approximately 18,206 crossovers produced for the US market between December 2023 and April 2024 were affected. Although the last potentially impacted vehicle was produced on April 2, Hyundai had already implemented revised software at the Alabama plant on March 6.

The abnormality was identified by assembly plant workers during routine quality checks on February 28. Hyundai engineers determined the need for software logic improvement and promptly informed Hyundai Motor America. Two unique incidents related to the issue were reported before the recall filing.

Apart from reducing rearward visibility and violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 111 for rear visibility, the software issue posed a crash risk. Hyundai instructed dealers to update the rearview camera system software for affected owners by June 1, with notifications sent via first-class mail.

Owners of 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe models can check for recall inclusion by contacting Hyundai customer service or using the automaker’s recall portal, with the recall referenced as 24V-246 by the federal agency and 258 by Hyundai Motor America.
