GM recently announced its foray into bidirectional charging with a vehicle-to-home (V2H) system, enabling compatible EVs to supply up to 10.2 kW to homes. The Chevrolet Silverado EV RST becomes GM’s inaugural electric vehicle to feature this capability, with other Ultium-based models slated for release by 2026.

Bidirectional charging facilitates not only EV battery charging but also powering external devices, offering versatility in various scenarios like vehicle-to-load (V2L), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), and vehicle-to-home (V2H) applications, particularly valuable during weather-induced power outages.

GM Energy’s V2H bundle, comprising the Powershift Charger and V2H Enablement Kit, marks the first of its kind, enabling power transfer from a GM EV to a home. Future expansions include stationary energy storage and solar integration, positioning GM as a direct competitor to existing products like Tesla’s Powerwall.

While the initial investment is notable, with the Powershift Charger priced at $1,699 and the V2H Enablement Kit at $5,600, GM’s partnership with Qmerit for installation services underscores its commitment to accessible bidirectional charging solutions. The Silverado EV RST, equipped with V2H capabilities, demonstrates GM’s commitment to advancing EV technology and addressing consumer needs.
