Distinct in their platforms, the family-oriented EV9 and the compact Niro EV have encountered a recall relating to the differential gear bolts within their gear drive units. An unfortunate oversight during production led to the potential misalignment of bolts in four units each of the EV9 and Niro EV, traceable back to Hyundai Transys, a Hyundai subsidiary in South Korea specializing in transmissions and drivetrain systems.

Vehicles affected were manufactured between November 2022 and May 2023 for the Niro EV and October 2023 through December 2023 for the larger EV9. Despite varying part numbers distinguishing the affected gear drive unit assemblies, corrective actions were implemented in production by May and December 2023, respectively.

Hyundai Transys’ oversight prompted Kia’s nationwide directive to replace the gear drive unit assemblies, issued to dealers on April 19. Loose bolts within the gear drive unit pose a critical risk, potentially leading to damage to the reduction gear, differential lockup, and loss of motive power, heightening the possibility of accidents.

Prompted by reports of abnormal noise and preliminary investigation findings, Kia Corporation proactively addressed the issue, emphasizing safety. While awaiting formal recall notifications, owners are encouraged to verify their vehicle’s status through Kia’s customer service, the NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline, dealership contact, or VIN checks on Kia’s website.
