Ford Performance made waves with the launch of its 760-horsepower supercharged V8, setting a new standard for raw power. Following this, the introduction of three naturally aspirated V8 engines, collectively known as the Coyote trio, offers enthusiasts a more accessible option at $11,500 each, compared to the hefty $29,500 price tag of the 5.2-liter Predator.

The Coyote trio comprises the Gen 4X Coyote (part number M-6007-M50H), tailored for optimal fitment, the Gen 4 Coyote for manual applications (M-6007-M50D), and the Gen 4 Coyote for automatic transmission (M-6007-M50DAUTO). The primary distinction between the Gen 4X and Gen 4 lies in the number of throttle bodies, with the former equipped with a single 80-mm unit and the latter featuring two 80-mm units.

The decision to develop a single-throttle-body version of the fourth-generation Coyote was driven by a focus on improved fitment. Additionally, weight variance is notable, with the 4X weighing in at 445 pounds, the 4 at 453 pounds, and the single-throttle-body 3 at 445 pounds.

Additional components, such as the alternator kit, ranging from $390 to $465, and the Mustang-branded engine cover priced at $200, further augment the engine’s versatility and aesthetic appeal. It’s worth noting that the engine cover is incompatible with earlier Coyote generations.

With compression ratios of 12.0:1 for the dual-throttle-body Gen 4 and 12.1:1 for the single throttle-body Gen 4X, both engines boast a robust construction featuring a plasma transferred wire arc spray aluminum cylinder block, sintered steel connecting rods, a forged steel crank, and hypereutectic aluminum pistons.

Critical components like 12-millimeter head bolts, cross-bolted main bearing caps, and a robust main bearing bulkhead ensure durability and reliability, further enhanced by a 9.5-quart steel oil pan. Notably, the owner’s manual specifies a requirement of 10 quarts of Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 engine oil for the Gen 4 Coyote, with regular oil changes recommended every 5,000 miles or annually for optimal performance and longevity.
