Last October, Kia revealed its new EV5 two-row electric SUV during the Hyundai Group’s first EV day in Seoul, South Korea. It’s like a smaller version of the EV9 crossover and comes in three different versions.
The basic one has a 64-kilowatt-hour battery and a 214-horsepower motor. The long-range version has an 88-kWh battery with the same motor. There’s also a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version that’s expected to have a combined 308 horsepower and can go 404 miles on a single charge.
Now, there’s talk about an EV5 GT model. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently shared some details about it. The EV5 is roughly the size of a Kia Sportage, but a bit smaller. It’s about 181.7 inches long, 73.8 inches wide, and 67.5 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 108.2 inches.
The EV5 GT will have two electric motors, one in the front and one in the back. The front motor can produce 215 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque, while the rear one adds 98 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque. Together, they can give the EV5 GT a total of 313 horsepower and 344 lb-ft of torque.
The EV5 GT will come with 20-inch wheels and 255/45 tires, which are a bit larger than the ones on the standard EV5. It’ll also have some cosmetic changes, like black trim and gloss black inserts, to give it a sportier look.
In China, the EV5 GT is expected to cost around $20,000 US dollars. It might be available in other markets too, but probably not in the US right away. Kia hasn’t said anything about making it in the US, so it might not be eligible for federal incentives here. However, there’s another fast electric vehicle from Kia on the way called the EV9 GT, which should be available early next year.
