Subaru is saying goodbye to an old friend: the Legacy sedan. This car has been around since 1989 and has made quite a name for itself. But now, Subaru has announced that 2025 will be the final year for the Legacy. Over the years, Subaru has sold more than 1.3 million Legacy models in the United States.

Why is the Legacy going away? Subaru explains that the car market is changing. More people are buying SUVs and crossovers instead of sedans like the Legacy. Subaru is also focusing more on making electric and hybrid vehicles. Last year, the Legacy sold about 25,000 units, while its sibling, the Outback, sold over 160,000 units.

Subaru plans to have eight electric models by the year 2028. Right now, the only fully electric Subaru is the Solterra, made in partnership with Toyota. Subaru has also promised to release three new electric SUVs in 2026.

But before the Legacy says its final goodbye, there’s one more model hitting the market. The 2025 Legacy will be available at dealerships this spring, starting at $24,895, the same price as the current 2024 model. This last version of the Legacy is part of a generation that started in 2020. It got a small update in 2023 to freshen up its look.

Even though the Legacy is going away, Subaru fans can still enjoy the Outback, which continues to sell well. However, the smaller Impreza, offered as a sedan and hatchback, is in a similar situation as the Legacy. It sold about 34,000 units last year, while the Crosstrek, another Subaru SUV, sold nearly as much as the Outback, around 159,000 units.
