As Dodge bid farewell to its muscle car era, it underwent a transformation in its performance lineup. Gone were the days of the Super Bee, 500, and R/T trims for the Charger, but Dodge introduced the Rallye as its new contender.

Debuting midway through the 1966 model year, the Charger, based on the B-body Coronet platform, aimed to rival the AMC Rambler Marlin. Despite its slightly higher price tag, the Charger’s attractive design and powerful V8 engines quickly won over enthusiasts.

By 1968, the Charger underwent a significant redesign, solidifying its position as Dodge’s flagship muscle car. With models like the 500, R/T, and the Daytona NASCAR special edition, the Charger became an icon of the muscle car era.

In 1971, Dodge redesigned the Charger once more, and by 1972, only the Rallye remained as the sole performance-oriented trim. Sporting subdued styling compared to its predecessors, the Rallye featured unique exterior elements like dark grille and louvered taillamps.

Though lacking the HEMI engine, the Rallye still offered three potent V8 options: the 400-ci, 340-ci, and 440-ci Magnum. Despite lower compression ratios, the Rallye remained a respectable contender in the muscle car scene.

While the Rallye may not have matched the power of its predecessors, it still garnered attention from enthusiasts. Dodge managed to sell 4,351 Rallyes out of approximately 75,500 Chargers produced in 1972.

Today, surviving 1972 Rallyes are among the rarest and most affordable Chargers from the golden age of muscle cars. With values ranging from $16,100 for a good-condition model to $88,000 for a fully restored example, the Rallye continues to capture the imagination of collectors and enthusiasts alike.
