In 2021, Ford reintroduced the Maverick nameplate for a compact pickup truck positioned below the Ranger. However, this modern iteration shares little resemblance with the original Maverick, which was a compact car.

Debuting in the 1970 model year, the Maverick stepped in for the Falcon, unable to meet upcoming NHTSA standards. Competing against the Chevrolet Nova and Dodge Dart, the Maverick also served as Ford’s response to the rising influx of Japanese imports from Datsun and Toyota.

Drawing heavy inspiration from the Mustang, the Maverick featured a long hood, fastback roof, and short deck, exuding a sportier aura compared to the Falcon. Its appeal was evident as Ford sold nearly 579,000 Mavericks in 1970, eclipsing Mustang deliveries at 191,239 units that year.

Though sales dipped below 300,000 from 1971 to 1973, they surged back in 1974 with the popularity of economy cars. Ford continued offering the Maverick with minor updates until 1977, totaling a remarkable 2.1 million sales over eight model years.

Despite its widespread sales, like many vehicles from that era, the Maverick was often considered disposable. Yet, at least one owner saw potential in its compact size and reduced weight, repurposing it for drag racing.

Sadly, this Maverick may never race again, having sat idle for an extended period with the condition of its underpinnings uncertain. Despite its status as a throwaway classic, collectors’ interest in the Maverick remains modest, with restored examples rarely fetching over $15,000. Nevertheless, it represents a unique interpretation of the Maverick’s legacy.
