Facing declining sales in the sedan market dominated by SUVs and trucks, Volvo ended production of the S60 at its South Carolina plant in June 2024.

Debuting in 1999 as the heir to the S70, the S60 carved a niche for Volvo in the compact luxury sedan segment, battling established rivals like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The first generation, built on a shared platform with other Volvo models, prioritized a sporty and upscale driving experience. It enjoyed a successful decade-long run with multiple revisions.

Facing a drop in sales, the Volvo S60 is undergoing a geographic shift. While the American market will lose access to the popular sedan, production is continuing in China.

This comes alongside a production line reshuffle at Volvo’s South Carolina plant to accommodate the electric EX90 SUV.

Despite its discontinuation in the US and UK, the S60 remains available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and a suite of premium features, offering a compelling option for drivers in select markets.
