Bugatti, a division of the Volkswagen Group, is on the cusp of delivering its extraordinary Bolide, a track-exclusive hypercar that stands in stark contrast to its road-going Chiron counterpart. Serving as Bugatti’s equivalent to Ferrari’s XX program, the Bolide represents an uncompromised exploration of performance, liberated from the constraints imposed by road regulations.

Though bearing the French term for “racing car,” this beast is not intended for traditional motorsports. With a limited production of 40 examples and a price tag surpassing four million euros (adjusted for inflation), the Bolide epitomizes Bugatti’s engineering mastery and serves as a fitting farewell to the iconic quad-turbo W16 engine.

This powerplant, renowned for its immense power, will soon be replaced by a hybrid V16 in the upcoming Chiron successor. While the Bolide shares a similar power output with the Chiron Super Sport, Bugatti’s decision to cap performance at this level for this downforce-laden machine has ignited curiosity about the engine’s untapped potential.

Bugatti’s Bolide, a purpose-built track weapon, was initially conceived as a 1,850-horsepower monster fueled by high-octane racing fuel. Recognizing the practical challenges associated with sourcing such specialized fuel, Bugatti made the strategic decision to transition to more readily available 98-octane gasoline.

While this change necessitated a modest power reduction, the Bolide remains an awe-inspiring testament to engineering prowess. Clad in a carbon fiber exoskeleton and equipped with advanced aerodynamic elements, the Bolide generates nearly 3,000 kilograms of downforce, enabling it to achieve a blistering top speed of 380 km/h.

The relentless pursuit of weight reduction is evident in the Bolide’s minimalist interior and extensive use of carbon fiber and 3D-printed components. As a result, Bugatti claims a dry weight of just 1,450 kilograms, significantly eclipsing the curb weight of its road-going counterparts, the Chiron and Veyron.
