The Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator are under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) due to reports of engine compartment fires. Multiple vehicle owner questionnaires, a death and injury report, and numerous field reports have been filed with the agency.

The investigation, prompted by preliminary evaluation PE24024, will determine the cause, extent, and frequency of the alleged problem. If a safety recall is necessary, Stellantis will be required to repair up to 781,459 vehicles produced between 2021 and 2023.

The NHTSA has identified the power steering pump’s electrical connector as the source of several thermal events. Located on the passenger side of the engine compartment, the connector has been implicated in most of the reported fires.

The agency is particularly concerned about the fact that many of these incidents occurred with the ignition off, posing a significant safety risk to drivers and passengers. It remains unclear if the redesigned 2024 models have a different connector or if any changes have been made to address the issue. The NHTSA is working closely with Stellantis to investigate the matter and determine the appropriate course of action.

The Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, produced in Toledo, Ohio, have faced declining sales in the first and second quarters of 2024. Despite the efforts of nearly 4,700 employees, demand for these vehicles has fallen short of expectations. This is likely due to a combination of factors, including high prices, reliability concerns, and an outdated base engine.

The 2024 Wrangler, starting at $31,995, is more expensive than its competitor, the Ford Bronco, which begins at $39,630. Both brands have been accused of price gouging, particularly with their performance-oriented models like the Raptor and 392 Rubicon. These vehicles have seen significant price increases in recent years, further deterring potential buyers.

Additionally, the Wrangler and Gladiator have faced criticism for their reliability issues. Reports of engine problems, transmission failures, and electrical glitches have contributed to a negative perception of these vehicles. While Jeep has made efforts to address these concerns, the damage to its reputation has already been done.

Furthermore, the base engine in the Wrangler, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, is considered outdated by many consumers. This engine is known for its fuel inefficiency and lack of power.

While Jeep has offered more powerful options, such as the 3.0 liter EcoDiesel and the 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder, these come at a significant premium.

The decline in sales of the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator can be attributed to a combination of factors, including high prices, reliability issues, and an outdated base engine. While Jeep has made efforts to address these concerns, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to regain their market share.
