The Plymouth Barracuda, while a popular muscle car, was unique in its availability of the legendary 426 cubic inch HEMI engine. Unlike its contemporaries like the Road Runner and Satellite, the Barracuda only offered this powerful V8 for two model years, 1970 and 1971.

This rarity, coupled with the HEMI’s discontinuation in 1971, has made the HEMI Cuda a highly sought-after and valuable collector’s item. Despite the passage of over five decades since its production, the HEMI Cuda remains a desirable choice for many classic car enthusiasts.

While some examples have been restored or are in various stages of restoration, others remain in their original, unrestored condition. One such car, a Tor Red 1970 HEMI Cuda, has recently surfaced after being stored away for an impressive 47 years.

A 1970 Plymouth HEMI Cuda, boasting 90% original paint and a rust free body, recently hit the auction block in Manchester, Connecticut. The numbers-matching HEMI V8 and four speed gearbox remain in their original condition, with the engine featuring a reportedly higher lift cam.

Despite a period of storage, the Cuda has been brought back to life with a suite of new components, including a timing chain, oil and fuel pumps, clutch, and alternator.

While the car is said to run, drive, and stop, its roadworthiness is not explicitly stated. Interior wear and incorrect wheels detract from its presentation, but the car’s potential to impress Mopar enthusiasts is undeniable. The auction ended prematurely due to an error, with a high bid of $125,100 falling short of the reserve.

Given the average selling price of 1970 HEMI Cuda hardtops exceeding $200,000, it remains to be seen if this particular example will reappear on the market and command a similar premium.

The current record for a non celebrity owned 1970 HEMI Cuda hardtop stands at $365,750. The Cuda’s history remains somewhat shrouded in mystery, but its original owner and the circumstances surrounding its storage are unknown.

Nevertheless, the car’s condition, coupled with its iconic powertrain and rarity, make it a highly desirable collectible. Mopar enthusiasts and muscle car collectors alike will undoubtedly be closely watching its future developments.
