Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for a small number of G 550 and G 63 SUVs due to faulty rear passenger-side door latches. These latches, installed during previous safety recalls or service visits, may not latch properly, potentially allowing the door to open unexpectedly while driving.

Additionally, attempting to force the door open with the child safety lock activated can deform internal components, preventing it from being opened from the inside. The issue stems from design flaws and tolerance variances in both the original and replacement latches.

Mercedes-Benz has been aware of this problem since early 2021 when a US dealer reported issues with the rear passenger-side door latch. After conducting an investigation, Mercedes-Benz determined that the issue was widespread and involved both the original and replacement latches.

To address this problem, Mercedes-Benz is replacing the affected latches with new, improved versions. The automaker has also taken steps to ensure that similar issues do not occur in the future.

These steps include conducting more rigorous testing of new parts and improving the design of the rear passenger-side door latch. Mercedes-Benz has apologized to customers affected by this recall and has assured them that the company is taking all necessary steps to ensure their safety.

The automaker has also urged customers to contact their local dealer if they have any concerns about their vehicle. Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for certain G-Class models due to a potential issue with the rear passenger-side door latch.

An investigation conducted by the automaker revealed that a limited number of vehicles equipped with latches manufactured before a revised assembly were distributed to the U.S. market.

The affected models include the G 550 and G 63 produced between August 2, 2018, and December 12, 2022. Mercedes-Benz is notifying owners of the affected vehicles and will provide them with instructions on how to schedule a free repair to replace the faulty latch.
