McLaren Automotive has issued a safety recall for 1,012 units of its discontinued GT supercar. The recall is due to a potential issue with the hood latch manual release cables. These cables may become damaged or improperly routed, leading to excessive tension and causing the hood to open unexpectedly while driving.

This poses a significant safety risk as the hood could strike the windshield and remain in the upright position. The affected vehicles are from the 2020 to 2023 model years and were produced between September 12, 2019, and May 19, 2023.

McLaren has not yet announced a schedule for owner notification. However, they have confirmed that a revised component with a slightly longer cable was introduced into GT production in May 2023 to address the issue.

Before reaching out to their dealerships, owners of affected McLaren GTs can proactively check their vehicle’s VIN on the NHTSA website to determine if their car is part of the recall. Service technicians are obligated to replace the front hood latch at no cost to affected owners.

Twinned with the 570S and other Sport Series models on the MonoCell II carbon-fiber chassis, the GT was revealed in March 2019. Detailed specifications were released in May of that year, showcasing the car’s impressive performance.

Equipped with a 4.0-liter engine, the GT delivers a powerful 620 metric horsepower and 630 Newton meters of torque, surpassing the 3.8-liter engine found in the 570S and the entry-level 540C. This substantial power output ensures a thrilling driving experience.
