When choosing the best off-road vehicles, people have different needs, interests, and preferences. Since there is no universal solution, an SUV that works well for one person may not be the right fit for another.

However, those looking for off-road-ready vehicles have a variety of additional options to customize their ride further.

By incorporating parts and accessories from the manufacturer or aftermarket suppliers, they can tailor the vehicle to meet their specific requirements. Below is a list of the ten most capable SUVs.

Designed for rugged terrain, it comes equipped with a front skid plate, a cat-back exhaust, Fox shocks, and an additional 0.7 inches of suspension travel.

After years of being overlooked in its segment, the 2022 Toyota Sequoia has received a complete redesign, bringing it back into the spotlight as a formidable full-size SUV.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia remains one of the oldest vehicles in its segment. While its size and power continue to offer appeal, its outdated design and aging powertrain struggle to compete with modern rivals like the Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Tahoe.

Other than a new white paint option, the Sequoia sees no significant changes for 2022. However, Toyota has given the SUV a complete redesign for the 2023 model year, equipping it with a standard hybrid powertrain and an array of contemporary features.

Back in 2008, we conducted a comparison test featuring the Toyota Sequoia, Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada. The Sequoia emerged as the winner.

Fast forward eleven years, and another comparison test placed the Sequoia in last place. This shift underscores how much the SUV market has evolved while the Sequoia has largely remained the same since 2008.

All of its competitors have undergone at least one full redesign (the Tahoe has had two). Stepping into the Sequoia, its age is immediately apparent.

Despite the presence of a modern touchscreen, the dashboard is cluttered with buttons and knobs, and the cabin, while spacious, feels outdated and built with cheap materials.

Another major drawback is its transmission. The Sequoia’s six-speed automatic is noticeably outdated compared to rivals with more advanced gearboxes, leading to sluggish performance. While its V-8 engine delivers ample power, it does so at the cost of fuel efficiency.

These shortcomings make the Sequoia difficult to recommend, even though it remains a capable family SUV. One bright spot is Toyota’s commitment to safety—every Sequoia comes equipped with a full suite of active safety technologies to enhance driver and passenger security.

5. 2021 Jeep Wrangler
