Once a sensor or bracket moves, many automakers require a calibration procedure before the safety systems will work again. That procedure needs special tools, target boards, or a supervised test drive.
Shops charge for that expertise. Even a minor parking-lot scrape can now add several hundred dollars in electronic work on top of the cosmetic repair.
The ten vehicles below were chosen because their bumpers are unusually dense with sensor hardware. Each one has documented cases of owners facing calibration charges for damage that looked cosmetic at first glance.
