J.D. Power’s 2026 APEAL Study shows that new-car satisfaction is becoming less about a single headline feature and more about how a vehicle feels to live with every day.
The study recorded an industry average of 858 points, up seven points from 2025, with improvements in interiors, exterior styling, storage, and ease of entry. It also found that battery-electric vehicles posted the largest year-over-year gain, rising 22 points.
Among individual models, the BMW X6 and BMW 7 Series tied for the highest score in the study. These 25 vehicles each won their respective segments, giving a broad look at what owners valued after 90 days behind the wheel.
1. BMW X2
The BMW X2 earned a 2026 J.D. Power APEAL model award, giving BMW another winner in an already dominant showing.
The X2 is positioned as a sportier alternative within BMW’s SUV range, blending crossover practicality with a more sharply styled body. That character fits the purpose of APEAL particularly well because the study is not simply measuring whether a vehicle works properly.
Owners are asked about emotional attachment and excitement across 37 attributes, including the experience of getting into the vehicle, comfort, styling, technology, and acceleration.

BMW AG collected six model-level awards in the 2026 study, more than any other automaker group.
The X2’s award therefore forms part of a much larger result for BMW, showing that owner appeal extended across different vehicle sizes and price points rather than being concentrated in one flagship model.
2. BMW X6
The BMW X6 produced the headline result of the 2026 study by tying with the BMW 7 Series for the highest individual model score. It also earned its segment award for the second consecutive year.
That is notable because the X6 takes a deliberately unusual approach to the luxury SUV formula, combining the elevated seating position and utility of an SUV with a sloping roofline.
J.D. Power’s current research lists the 2026 X6 with an 85-point consumer rating, while its driving-experience component is rated 92 out of 100.
Those figures are separate from its APEAL score, but they illustrate the strong owner response to the vehicle’s driving and ownership characteristics.

The APEAL result is particularly significant because it comes from verified owners rather than automotive journalists or professional testers.
3. BMW 2 Series
The BMW 2 Series secured another model-level APEAL award for BMW, demonstrating that owner enthusiasm was not limited to the company’s larger and more expensive vehicles. The compact BMW competes in a category where driving involvement can have a major effect on how owners perceive their cars.
J.D. Power’s 2026 vehicle-quality materials place the 2 Series within the small premium car landscape, alongside models from Audi and Mercedes-Benz. That makes its award meaningful beyond simply adding another trophy to BMW’s total.

The APEAL Study asks owners to assess attributes ranging from comfort and interior experience to the sensation produced when accelerating. A compact luxury car therefore has multiple opportunities to make a strong impression.
BMW’s six model awards, including this one, helped make it the corporation with the most winning models in the 2026 study.
4. BMW 5 Series
The BMW 5 Series continued BMW’s impressive performance by taking its segment’s APEAL award. The model has long occupied the middle ground between executive-car comfort and driver-focused performance, and the current generation adds a broader technology package to that formula.
J.D. Power’s model history notes that the 2026 version carries over with minimal changes while adding faster charging for plug-in-hybrid versions and new standard equipment such as lane-keeping assistance and active parking assistance control.
Those details matter because the APEAL study increasingly reflects how owners interact with vehicles beyond the engine and transmission. Interior functionality and technology execution have become important parts of satisfaction.

The 5 Series therefore represents the kind of vehicle where traditional premium-car expectations and modern convenience features meet, helping explain why it remained a segment winner in the latest owner survey.
5. BMW 7 Series
The BMW 7 Series shares the highest individual APEAL score in the entire 2026 study with the BMW X6. That is an especially significant result because the 7 Series represents BMW’s flagship sedan, where owners typically expect a high level of comfort, technology, and refinement.
J.D. Power’s current model information lists the 2026 7 Series with available powertrains ranging from the 375-horsepower 740i to the 536-horsepower 760i xDrive, along with a plug-in-hybrid 750e xDrive.

Its current J.D. Power consumer rating is 81 out of 100, with an 85-point driving-experience rating. Those ratings are distinct from APEAL, but they provide additional evidence that owners respond strongly to the car’s combination of performance and luxury.
The APEAL study confirms that the flagship sedan’s appeal translated into the highest model-level result.
6. MINI Countryman
The MINI Countryman gave BMW AG another winning model while also contributing to MINI’s exceptional brand performance. MINI ranked highest among mass-market brands in the 2026 APEAL Study for the third consecutive year, scoring 875 points.
The Countryman also captured its segment award for the fourth consecutive year. That combination makes this result more interesting than a single model victory. It suggests that the appeal associated with MINI’s broader brand experience carried into its largest vehicle.

The Countryman has to satisfy buyers looking for the distinctive MINI identity while also functioning as a practical crossover. J.D. Power says interior experience produced the largest category improvement in the 2026 study, rising 11 points industrywide.
Storage and ease of getting in and out also improved by 10 points each. Those everyday considerations are particularly relevant to a crossover such as the Countryman.
7. Hyundai Palisade
The Hyundai Palisade earned a model-level APEAL award for Hyundai Motor Group, reinforcing the group’s strong performance across both Hyundai and Kia. Hyundai finished second among mass-market brands with an 858-point brand score, exactly matching the industry average.
The Palisade’s appeal comes in a segment where owners place considerable emphasis on interior space, comfort, and ease of use. Those characteristics align closely with areas J.D. Power
Power was identified as a major contributor to this year’s satisfaction improvement. Interior satisfaction increased by 11 points, while storage and access each improved by 10 points.

The Palisade’s award therefore illustrates how mainstream manufacturers can compete effectively on attributes traditionally associated with more expensive vehicles.
Hyundai Motor Group ultimately collected five model-level awards, making it the second-most successful corporate group in the study behind BMW AG.
8. Hyundai Santa Cruz
The Hyundai Santa Cruz was another model-level winner for Hyundai Motor Group and received its award for the second consecutive year. Unlike a conventional midsize pickup, the Santa Cruz combines a compact footprint with an open cargo bed and crossover-style construction.
That gives it a distinctive place in the American market, where buyers often want truck utility without stepping into a full-size pickup. The APEAL award is particularly noteworthy because the study measures emotional attachment as well as functional satisfaction.
Owners were surveyed about 37 different vehicle attributes after 90 days, covering everything from comfort and appearance to acceleration and technology.

The Santa Cruz’s repeat recognition indicates that its unusual formula continues to resonate with new owners. It also contributed to Hyundai Motor Group’s five model awards, a result that placed the group second only to BMW AG among corporate winners.
9. Kia Carnival
The Kia Carnival secured an APEAL award as part of Kia’s strong contribution to Hyundai Motor Group’s five winning models.
The vehicle occupies an interesting position in the American market because Kia presents it as a multipurpose vehicle while delivering the spaciousness and seating flexibility expected from a modern family hauler.
That makes the Carnival a natural fit for a study increasingly influenced by interior functionality. J.D. Power found that interior satisfaction improved by 11 points across the industry, the largest gain among the measured categories.

Owners also reported stronger satisfaction with storage solutions, including cupholders, phone placement, and center-console design. For a vehicle whose appeal depends heavily on carrying people comfortably and conveniently, these areas matter.
The Carnival’s award suggests that its combination of family-oriented practicality and passenger-focused features made a strong impression during the first 90 days of ownership.
10. Kia K4
The Kia K4 earned a model-level APEAL award and became one of five Hyundai Motor Group winners in the 2026 study. It also received recognition for the second consecutive year. As a compact car, the K4 operates in a highly competitive part of the American market where affordability and everyday usability can strongly influence owner satisfaction.

J.D. Power’s 2026 study found that mainstream brands have continued closing the emotional satisfaction gap with premium manufacturers. The gap between premium brands, excluding Tesla, and mass-market brands has fallen to 29 points, compared with 66 points in 2008.
The K4’s recognition fits that broader trend. It shows that an affordable compact vehicle can generate strong enthusiasm when its design, interior execution, technology, and daily usability come together effectively. Kia’s third-place mass-market brand score of 857 further supports the company’s strong showing.
11. Kia K5
The Kia K5 stands out because its APEAL award extends an unusually long winning streak. J.D. Power says the K5 has received a model-level award for six consecutive years. That consistency separates it from a vehicle that simply benefited from a particularly strong redesign or one exceptional survey cycle.
The K5 competes in the midsize-car category, where buyers typically expect a combination of comfort, useful space and engaging road manners. Its repeated recognition indicates that Kia has managed to maintain strong owner satisfaction despite changing expectations around technology and vehicle design.

Kia also ranked third among mass-market brands in the 2026 APEAL Study with 857 points, only one point behind Hyundai. The K5’s six-year run therefore sits within a broader pattern of strong owner response to Kia products rather than appearing as an isolated success.
12. Chevrolet Blazer
The Chevrolet Blazer was one of three General Motors models to win a 2026 APEAL segment award. Its result is notable because the Blazer occupies a more style-oriented position within Chevrolet’s SUV lineup, giving buyers an alternative to more traditionally shaped family crossovers.
J.D. Power’s study found that exterior styling satisfaction improved by 10 points industrywide, tying ease of getting into and out of the vehicle for the second-largest category increase. That trend is relevant to the Blazer because its design is an important part of its identity.

GM’s three winning models covered Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac, demonstrating that the company’s success was distributed across multiple brands rather than being concentrated in one division.
The Blazer’s award consequently forms part of a broad showing for General Motors in the latest owner-satisfaction study.
13. GMC Yukon
The GMC Yukon earned one of General Motors’ three 2026 APEAL model awards. As a large SUV, it serves buyers who prioritize passenger capacity, cargo space, and the ability to handle substantial family and recreational demands.
That makes the Yukon an interesting recipient in a study where practical interior improvements produced some of the largest year-over-year gains.
J.D. Power specifically identified storage improvements as a major contributor to stronger owner satisfaction, with better cupholders, phone placement, and center-console design among the areas owners responded positively to.

Large SUVs have extensive interiors, so improvements in those everyday details can influence the ownership experience considerably. The Yukon was joined by the Chevrolet Blazer and Cadillac Escalade as GM’s three winning models.
That gave General Motors the third-highest corporate total of model-level awards in the 2026 study.
14. Cadillac Escalade
The Cadillac Escalade completed General Motors’ trio of APEAL winners. It represents the premium end of GM’s SUV portfolio and competes in a category where buyers expect substantial comfort, technology, and road presence.
The award is important because J.D. Power says premium vehicles no longer possess the overwhelming advantage they once held in several ownership attributes. The emotional satisfaction gap between premium and mass-market brands has narrowed dramatically since 2008.

That means a vehicle such as the Escalade has to deliver a convincing experience across numerous areas rather than relying solely on its luxury badge.
Its recognition in the 2026 study shows that Cadillac succeeded in its segment according to owner responses. The Escalade’s award, combined with those received by the Blazer and Yukon, gave GM three model-level victories.
15. Ford Super Duty
The Ford Super Duty earned another APEAL award and extended its winning streak to three consecutive years. That makes it one of the most consistent model-level performers in the 2026 study.
Unlike passenger vehicles that can depend heavily on styling or cabin ambience, a heavy-duty pickup has to satisfy owners who use it for demanding work and towing requirements.
Its repeat recognition suggests that the ownership experience remains strong among buyers of this particularly capability-focused type of vehicle. Ford collected two model-level awards in 2026, with the Mustang joining the Super Duty.

The study’s emphasis on 37 individual attributes also means the Super Duty was evaluated beyond its ability to perform hard labor. Comfort, controls, technology, exterior design and the driver’s sense of satisfaction all contribute to the APEAL result.
16. Ford Mustang
The Ford Mustang added another award to Ford’s 2026 results and earned recognition for the second consecutive year. Unlike the Super Duty, the Mustang’s appeal is closely tied to performance, design, and the emotional experience of driving.
Those characteristics fit naturally with J.D. Power’s APEAL methodology, which specifically asks owners about exhilaration when accelerating as well as comfort and other everyday attributes. The Mustang therefore represents the emotional side of the study particularly clearly.

Ford’s two winning models also show that the brand’s strongest APEAL results came from two very different types of vehicles. One is a heavy-duty pickup, while the other is an iconic performance-oriented coupe.
That range is important because the study does not reward one particular body style. Each model competes within its appropriate segment, and the Mustang’s second consecutive award shows that its formula continues to resonate with new owners.
17. Jaguar F-Pace
The Jaguar F-Pace secured a 2026 APEAL award for Jaguar Land Rover, giving the automaker one of two winning models alongside the Land Rover Defender.
The F-Pace occupies the performance-oriented luxury SUV space, where buyers generally expect distinctive styling and a more engaging driving character than they might find in a conventional family crossover.
J.D. Power’s findings show that exterior styling and driving-related satisfaction remain important elements of the ownership experience, even as practical interior improvements become more influential.

The F-Pace’s award consequently reflects more than its equipment list. It indicates that owners responded positively to the way the vehicle delivers its broader character during the first 90 days.
JLR’s two awards also show that both Jaguar and Land Rover succeeded in their respective segments rather than one brand carrying the corporation’s entire result.
18. Land Rover Defender
The Land Rover Defender earned a 2026 APEAL model award alongside the Jaguar F-Pace, giving JLR two segment winners. The Defender’s appeal comes from an unusual combination of rugged design, off-road heritage and modern cabin technology.
That combination gives it a distinct identity in a luxury SUV market increasingly filled with road-focused crossovers. J.D. Power’s research is particularly relevant to such a vehicle because the APEAL study examines both emotional and functional elements of ownership.

Owners assess everything from how comfortable the vehicle feels to how exciting it is when accelerating. The Defender’s recognition indicates that its combination of character and usability resonated with enough owners to lead its segment.
The award also contributes to a broader trend identified by J.D. Power, in which customers increasingly judge premium vehicles by the execution of the entire experience rather than simply by brand prestige.
19. Nissan Murano
The Nissan Murano earned a model-level award and also became one of the study’s repeat winners, having received recognition for the second consecutive year.
The midsize crossover has historically occupied a space between mainstream practicality and more distinctive styling, making it a natural candidate for a study focused on how much owners enjoy their vehicles.
Nissan received two model-level awards in 2026, with the Armada joining the Murano. The results suggest that the company’s strongest owner appeal was spread across two very different SUV sizes.

J.D. Power’s research shows that exterior styling and ease of entry both improved significantly across the industry this year.
Those changes matter to crossover buyers, who often use their vehicles for a mixture of commuting, family duties, and longer trips. The Murano’s repeat recognition indicates that its package continued to connect with owners.
20. Nissan Armada
The Nissan Armada earned the second APEAL model award for Nissan in 2026. As a full-size SUV, it serves a very different customer from the Murano, yet both achieved segment-level recognition in the same study.
That contrast makes Nissan’s result especially interesting. The Armada’s appeal depends heavily on the combination of substantial space, road presence, and the features expected from a large family vehicle.

J.D. Power’s study found that owners became more satisfied with interior design and storage during 2026, two areas that can have an outsized effect in large SUVs. The study’s methodology also goes beyond functional evaluation by measuring emotional attachment after 90 days.
Nissan’s two winning vehicles therefore demonstrate that strong owner satisfaction can be achieved through distinctly different approaches to the SUV market.
21. Toyota RAV4
The Toyota RAV4 was one of two Toyota models to receive a 2026 APEAL award, joining the Crown Signia. The RAV4 operates in one of the most competitive parts of the American market, where buyers often prioritize practicality, efficiency, technology, and ease of use.
Winning a segment in that environment is significant because owners are comparing the vehicle with numerous established alternatives.
The APEAL Study found that mass-market brands have substantially narrowed the emotional satisfaction gap with premium brands, and Toyota’s result illustrates that broader competitive shift.

The RAV4’s recognition is also separate from reliability or dependability measurements. APEAL focuses on how owners feel about their vehicle after 90 days, rather than measuring long-term mechanical durability.
Its award therefore represents owner enthusiasm and satisfaction rather than a claim about reliability.
22. Toyota Crown Signia
The Toyota Crown Signia secured a model-level APEAL award alongside the RAV4, giving Toyota two segment winners. Its position in Toyota’s lineup is unusual, blending a more premium-oriented design with the practicality of a crossover.
That makes owner perception especially important because buyers entering this category may have expectations different from those shopping for a conventional Toyota SUV. The 2026 APEAL results show that owners increasingly respond to design, interior functionality, and ease of use, with all three areas recording significant gains across the industry.

The Crown Signia’s recognition suggests that Toyota’s more upscale crossover approach successfully connected with owners during their first 90 days.
It also demonstrates why APEAL results should not be confused with sales rankings. A vehicle does not need to be a segment sales leader to earn the highest owner-appeal score in its category.
23. Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class was the only Mercedes-Benz model to receive a 2026 APEAL model-level award. It won within the compact premium car category, where it competes against several established luxury sedans.
The result is particularly interesting because Mercedes-Benz did not collect multiple awards despite its extensive U.S. lineup. That makes the C-Class’s recognition a focused result for the brand rather than part of a broad sweep.

J.D. Power says premium vehicles have lost much of their historic advantage in individual ownership attributes, placing greater pressure on luxury manufacturers to execute every part of the experience well.
The C-Class’s award indicates that owners responded positively enough to its combination of design, comfort, technology, and driving experience to place it at the top of its segment.
24. Ram 1500
The Ram 1500 was Stellantis’ lone model-level APEAL winner in 2026. Its recognition came in the full-size pickup category, a fiercely competitive segment in the United States where owners often demand a mixture of capability, comfort, and technology.
The Ram 1500 has traditionally differentiated itself through its emphasis on interior refinement while retaining the practical qualities expected from a full-size truck.
That balance aligns closely with the direction of this year’s APEAL results. J.D. Power identified interior satisfaction as the fastest-improving category, with an 11-point increase.

Owners also reported stronger responses to storage and usability. For a truck that can serve as both a work vehicle and a daily driver, those details are highly relevant.
The Ram’s award therefore reflects the broader importance of making a truck comfortable and convenient as well as capable.
25. Porsche 911
The Porsche 911 completed the list with a 2026 APEAL model award in the premium sporty car category. It also represents a broader success for Porsche, which ranked highest among premium brands for the third consecutive year with an APEAL brand score of 896.

J.D. Power says Porsche was the only premium brand to score above the relevant segment average. The 911 itself is particularly well suited to a study measuring emotional attachment because acceleration, driving excitement, and the sensation of being behind the wheel are central to its identity.
Its award also shows that the APEAL Study is not simply a measurement of practical ownership. A vehicle can win because it makes owners feel excited every time they drive it.
The 911’s recognition, combined with Porsche’s brand-leading result, makes it one of the clearest examples of that principle in the 2026 study.
