Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for specific Maverick hybrid pickup trucks from the 2022 and 2023 model years due to electronic issues affecting the truck’s gauge cluster. The recall affects approximately 62,813 Mavericks in the United States.
According to the automaker’s filing with the NHTSA, certain Maverick hybrid models may experience a problem where the instrument cluster binnacle fails to illuminate crucial readouts such as the speedometer or vehicle warning lights.
This issue not only poses inconvenience and difficulty for affected owners but also violates several of the NHTSA’s Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
Ford attributes the issue to faulty software, particularly rapid CAN signals, causing the truck to switch rapidly between its Sleep and Awake modes. This error can lead to the corruption of the truck’s internal memory registers, resulting in the cluster not lighting up as intended.
The problem came to light after 167 trucks were brought in for warranty claims related to the cluster, prompting analysis by the production team at Ford’s Hermosillo plant in Mexico.
The recall is specific to the hybrid variant of the Maverick, with no reported issues related to the more powerful EcoBoost powertrains.
Fortunately, Ford has already developed a solution for affected vehicles. Owners will be able to receive a software update from their local dealerships at no cost. Notification letters are scheduled to be sent to owners on March 18, 2024.
