In last weekend’s race in Monte Carlo, there wasn’t much excitement or passing. The top ten drivers finished in the same order they started in. People are talking about changing the rules to make the race more interesting.
One idea came from George Russell, who drives for Mercedes. He suggested using only soft tires instead of having three different types. He thinks this could make the race more unpredictable.
Mario Isola, who works at Pirelli and deals with Formula 1, said they could test this idea by using computer simulations. But he’s not sure it will work well because drivers might have to drive slower to make their tires last longer.
Isola explained, “In Monaco, it’s hard to pass other cars. So, even if you slow down, nobody can go past you.”
He also said making teams stop in the pit more often wouldn’t help much either because all the teams would probably end up doing the same thing.
Isola thinks a wider track would be best for Monaco, but that’s not possible because of the buildings. For other street races like Miami and Las Vegas, using softer tires might make the races more exciting.
Pirelli is already working on making better tires for next year. They want to make tires that don’t get too hot and add a softer option for street races.
Isola said, “We’re going to have a new, softer tire, called the C6. We’re making it softer because more races are being held on street tracks, and we need tires that work well on them.”
They’re also trying to make sure the tires don’t get too hot during the races. They tested these new tires at Paul Ricard track and are almost ready to use them next year.
