Honda is recalling 187,000 Ridgeline trucks built between 2020 and 2024 because of a problem with a wire harness. This problem can make the rearview camera stop working. This isn’t the first time this has happened. The same problem caused a recall in 2022 for Ridgeline trucks made between 2017 and 2019. Those trucks got new wire harnesses, but now, the issue is affecting even more trucks than before.

The part causing the problem in the recent recall has a different number from the one used in the previous recall. This shows that the changes Honda made over the years didn’t solve the issue. Honda has received 402 warranty claims related to this problem, but thankfully, there have been no accidents or injuries.

The wire harness that’s causing the trouble is made by a company called Aptiv Services US. It has a twist tube that can get damaged by moisture. Over time, this tube becomes brittle because of changes in temperature and road salt. Just opening and closing the tailgate regularly can eventually cause it to break.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was already looking into this issue for Ridgeline trucks made between 2020 and 2023. Now, Honda has decided to include 2024 model year trucks in the recall as well. Honda started using a stronger wire in production on May 3rd. But, trucks made between April 25 and May 3rd have been fitted with the improved part afterward.

Dealers already know about the recall and how to fix it. Owners should expect to receive a letter about the recall starting from July 1st. They can also contact Honda Service at 1-888-234-2138 with the recall number YI7.

While the Ridgeline doesn’t usually have many recalls, other trucks have had issues this year. The Ford Maverick has been recalled three times for problems with taillights and powertrain modules. Toyota has recalled nearly 400,000 Tacomas because of a loose nut issue, and even the Cybertruck had to be recalled for a problem with its accelerator pedal. Although the Ridgeline’s backup camera issue isn’t as serious, it’s still important to get it fixed to avoid any problems in the future.
