The motorsports world has been abuzz since the announcement in early January 2023 that Kyle Larson, a California native, intends to undertake ‘The Double’ – competing in both the Indy 500 and the 600-mile Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Memorial Day Weekend.

At 31, Larson will follow in the footsteps of only four other drivers who have attempted this challenge, with Kurt Busch being the last in 2014. The first to try was John Andretti in 1994, followed by Robby Gordon, who attempted it five times, and Tony Stewart, who made two bids.

Stewart’s 2001 effort remains the most successful, finishing sixth in the Indy 500 and third in Charlotte, making him the only driver to complete all 1,100 miles on the same day.

This endeavor has intensified Larson’s already busy schedule. Despite his reputation for participating in numerous races outside of NASCAR throughout the year, Larson has devoted considerable time to test outings in an Indy car for Arrow McLaren, including sessions at Phoenix Raceway earlier this month.

Despite the distractions, Larson remains focused on adding a Daytona 500 win to his impressive list of achievements. Speaking about his mindset, Larson emphasized his usual hectic schedule, downplaying any added pressure due to ‘The Double’ challenge.

Looking ahead, Larson has nearly two months before his next scheduled IndyCar outing. He will participate in an open test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on April 10-11, providing him with crucial track experience before the Indy 500.

Larson’s preparation for ‘The Double’ has been comprehensive, with ample resources available to him. This includes support from Arrow McLaren’s team, co-owned by NASCAR Hall of Famer Rick Hendrick, and guidance from experienced figures like Tony Kanaan, David Malukas, Pato O’Ward, Alexander Rossi, and Brian Campe.

Amid growing anticipation, Larson expressed both confidence and realism about his prospects in the Indy 500. While he believes he has a chance to win with the support of a great team and valuable practice time, he also acknowledges the challenges and the opportunity for personal growth regardless of the outcome.
