During the R2 revealing, Rivian made a surprise announcement, introducing a smaller sibling known as the R3. Positioned below the R2, the Rivian R3 is an electric crossover sharing the same platform but with a shorter wheelbase and a more affordable price point.

While Rivian has yet to disclose pricing details, it’s confirmed that the R3 will be priced under $45,000, which is the starting price for the R2. Both single-motor rear-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations will be offered.

Also, the standard R3, Rivian introduced a sportier variant named the R3X during the event. Although specific details about the R3X are scarce, it’s equipped with a tri-motor setup, promising spirited performance in a compact package. The R3X features retro wheels, off-road-oriented tires, and a spoiler reminiscent of the Lancia Delta.

Like its predecessors, the R3 will feature a front trunk (frunk) and a conventional liftgate with separately opening rear glass. Inside, the cabin boasts simplicity, highlighted by a large central touchscreen, digital gauge cluster, and ample storage space in the armrest.

Two gloveboxes, a feature highly requested by R1T owners, will also be available. The option for a full glass roof is offered, though it remains unclear if it will include a shade or remain uncovered like Tesla’s design.

While details about the R3’s range have not been disclosed, it’s anticipated to offer slightly less than the R2’s 300-mile rating. Notably, images from Rivian depict an NACS connector on the rear passenger fender, facilitating easy access to Tesla Supercharger stations.

The surprise revealing of the R3 caught many off guard, as rumors had hinted at another model in development but not its simultaneous debut alongside the R2.

Rivian has intentionally kept details scarce, likely due to the R3’s anticipated release being after the R2’s, which is scheduled for the first half of 2026. Although customers can secure a $100 refundable deposit for an R2, no such option is currently available for the R3.

Stay tuned for updates on the Rivian R3 as more information becomes available.
