The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a preliminary investigation into approximately 250,712 Honda vehicles, including the Honda Insight and Honda Passport, due to reports of inadvertent activation of automatic emergency braking systems.

According to the NHTSA, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 46 complaints regarding this issue, which have included reports of three crashes or fires and two injuries. The affected vehicles are the 2019-2022 models of the Honda Insight, a hybrid electric car, and the Honda Passport SUV.

Inadvertent activation of the automatic emergency braking system poses a potential risk of collision, leading to injury and property damage. Honda’s North American office has not yet provided a comment on the matter.

During the preliminary evaluation phase, the NHTSA will review consumer complaints and manufacturer service bulletins to assess whether a safety defect may exist. This marks the initial step in the NHTSA’s investigation process.
