Formula 1 and MotoGP stand as two of the most globally renowned motorsport competitions, attracting widespread attention and enthusiasts worldwide. These pinnacle racing series, tailored for four and two-wheel vehicles, respectively, have long been coveted assets in the motorsport world. Now, they share a common owner a single American entity.
Despite the unconventional timing announced on April Fool’s Day the current owner of Formula 1 revealed a significant acquisition: Dorna Sports, the commercial rights holder for MotoGP. Liberty Media, a mass media company established in 1991, previously acquired the controlling interest in Formula One Group in the late 2010s, stirring global discussions.
Dorna Sports: A Two-Wheel Powerhouse
Dorna Sports, established in 1988 as the organizer of what evolved into the FIM World Championship Grand Prix, has become a cornerstone of two-wheeled motorsport. Its importance was underscored by Liberty Media’s hefty investment, valuing MotoGP at €4.2 billion ($4.5 billion), with an equity value of €3.5 billion ($3.7 billion).
While the acquisition awaits finalization by year-end 2024, subject to regulatory approvals, Liberty Media intends to nurture MotoGP’s growth for fans, teams, commercial partners, and shareholders. Though immediate impacts on the ongoing season are unlikely, the motorsport community anticipates future developments under new ownership from 2025 onward.
