Chevrolet’s recent announcement about the Corvette ZR1 has generated significant excitement, particularly regarding its impressive power output of 1,064 horsepower, which exceeds that of the early Bugatti Veyron by 63 horsepower. This staggering performance capability leads to the central question: just how fast can this vehicle go?

The answer, confirmed by Chevrolet through a video post, is a remarkable top speed of 233 mph. This figure positions the ZR1 as one of the fastest production cars in the world, setting a high benchmark for automotive performance enthusiasts.

To validate its top speed, Chevrolet conducted testing at the Automotive Testing Papenberg, a 7.8-mile high-speed oval track located in northwestern Germany. For optimal aerodynamic efficiency, the two ZR1s utilized the smaller of the two available spoilers and a shorter front wicker bill, along with standard suspension and lightweight aluminum wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. These modifications helped reduce drag, allowing the vehicles to reach their maximum potential during the speed trials.

In an interesting twist, the top-speed runs were executed by General Motors President Mark Reuss, rather than a professional driver. Reuss shared his experience of reaching such high speeds, recounting how he initially hit 231 mph on the first day of practice before returning the next morning to push the limits further. With improved conditions, he was able to achieve the stunning speed of 233 mph, showcasing both his courage and the vehicle’s engineering capabilities.

Reuss detailed the process of achieving this top speed, explaining that he entered the 2.5-mile straightaway at around 222 mph before hitting the peak speed. He noted the car’s stable and reassuring nature during the high-speed run, emphasizing its engineering excellence. Although he considered the potential for tweaking the gear ratios for a marginal speed increase, he confidently stated that the car had reached its limit at that speed.

The presence of NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon during the testing added a layer of excitement to the event. Reuss clarified that Gordon participated in the ZR1’s high-speed run to engage with the team before heading to the Nürburgring Nordschleife for further development.

Reuss underscored the importance of reaching such milestones, likening the pursuit of top speed to monumental achievements like “going to the moon.” For him, achieving a speed of 233 mph in a ZR1 represented not just a personal thrill but a significant accomplishment in automotive engineering and innovation.
