The upcoming BMW 3 Series is poised to be a significant milestone in the brand’s evolution, marking the launch of its new “Neue Klasse” (New Class) era. This new line of vehicles is set to redefine BMW’s design and technology, with the 3 Series playing a pivotal role. BMW CEO Oliver Zipse has confirmed that at least six new models will debut within a two-year span, starting with an all-electric mid-size SUV to rival the Audi Q6 e-tron, and replacing the BMW iX3. The next-generation 3 Series is expected to arrive in 2026, offering both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric versions, competing with the Mercedes CLA, which will also adopt a similar dual-powertrain approach.

The electric version of the 3 Series, potentially reviving the i3 name, will feature a bespoke EV platform, distinct from the petrol-powered models, which will continue using the current model’s underpinnings. Despite the different platforms, both versions will share the same Neue Klasse design language, similar to MINI’s approach with its Cooper hatchback, where styling cues are consistent across both petrol and EV variants. This unified design philosophy will be heavily influenced by the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept, with the new 3 Series adopting a more traditional three-box saloon shape, harking back to BMW’s classic models of the 1960s.

The exterior design of the 3 Series will include a reimagined interpretation of BMW’s iconic kidney grilles, slimmer than those seen on models like the 4 Series and 7 Series, and integrated with advanced driver-assistance systems. The classic Hofmeister kink and pronounced wheel arches will give the new 3 Series a solid, planted stance, though some futuristic design elements from the concept, such as LED strakes and digitized wing mirrors, will be replaced by more conventional features in the test car.

Inside, the new 3 Series will embrace a minimalist approach, prioritizing driver focus with its “eyes on the road, hands on the wheel” philosophy. It will feature the next-generation iDrive infotainment system and a new “Panoramic Vision” display that projects key information across the windshield, eliminating the need for a traditional instrument cluster. Additionally, a 3D head-up display and intuitive steering wheel controls will enhance the driving experience, though the iDrive rotary controller will likely be absent.

The electric 3 Series will benefit from cutting-edge battery technology, with an 800V architecture enabling rapid charging speeds, offering up to 186 miles (300 km) of range in just 10 minutes. The new powertrain will utilize cylindrical battery cells, providing up to 20% better energy density, 30% more range, and 30% faster charging compared to current batteries.

For those preferring a traditional engine, the combustion options will include plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid versions, with the possibility of a high-performance M340 or M350 variant. BMW is also preparing for the future with a new M3, expected in 2027, which will offer both petrol and electric powertrains, including a quad-motor setup delivering up to 1,341bhp in its most powerful form.
