Subaru has recently addressed a significant security flaw in its STARLINK connected vehicle service, which could have allowed hackers to remotely control vehicles and access sensitive customer data.

The vulnerability was discovered by cybersecurity researchers who found that attackers could exploit the flaw using minimal information such as a license plate, last name, ZIP code, email address, or phone number.

The flaw allowed unauthorized access to vehicle functions, including the ability to remotely start, stop, lock, unlock, and retrieve the current location of any Subaru vehicle.

Additionally, attackers could access a year’s worth of location history, personally identifiable information (PII), emergency contacts, billing details, and vehicle PINs.

The vulnerability stemmed from an improperly secured endpoint in the STARLINK admin portal, which allowed password resets without requiring a confirmation token.

Upon discovering the flaw, security researchers Sam Curry and Shubham Shah reported it to Subaru. The company promptly patched the vulnerability within 24 hours.

While there is no evidence that the flaw was exploited maliciously, the potential impact could have been severe, highlighting the importance of robust security measures in connected vehicle systems.
