BMW has expanded a major starter-motor recall in China, with more than 150,000 cars and SUVs now included in campaigns involving the risk of overheating and, in extreme cases, fire.

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced on September 4 that BMW China and BMW Brilliance would recall 93,071 imported vehicles because repeated engine starts can cause abnormal internal wear in the starter motor.

A separate 57,423 domestically produced 5 Series sedans and 364 imported 7 Series cars are also affected by a different starter-related defect involving inadequate relay waterproofing.

Together, the three starter-motor campaigns cover 150,858 vehicles. The recalls expand earlier campaigns and show that BMW is addressing related starter problems across a broad range of vehicles and production years.

The latest action covers models ranging from the 2 Series and 4 Series to the 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, X4, X5, X6, and Z4. According to Autoevolution, BMW is also conducting two much smaller campaigns involving 218 vehicles and a software issue related to integrated brake assistance.

Internal Wear Can Lead to a Short Circuit

The largest campaign, identified by SAMR as S2026M0091V, affects 93,071 imported BMW vehicles manufactured between February 22, 2021, and April 29, 2025.

The affected vehicles include imported versions of the 2 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, X4, X5, X6, and Z4. SAMR said the starter motors can experience abnormal wear after repeated engine starts. That wear can eventually make starting the vehicle difficult.

The more serious concern occurs in extreme cases, when the internal wear can result in an electrical short circuit inside the starter. The short can generate localized overheating and create a fire risk. BMW will replace the affected starter motors with improved units at no cost to owners.

The campaign is an expansion of a recall BMW announced in China on March 11, 2026. That earlier action already involved starter motors with the same basic wear-related concern, meaning BMW has identified a wider population of vehicles requiring corrective action.

The defect illustrates why starter motors can become a safety issue even though they operate for only a short period during each engine start. The component carries significant electrical current, and an internal fault can produce substantial heat.

The recall does not mean every affected starter will fail or overheat. Instead, BMW and Chinese regulators are addressing the potential before a dangerous failure occurs.

Owners may first notice a starting problem, but the absence of obvious symptoms does not necessarily mean the starter is outside the risk population. That is why the recall applies to vehicles based on production records and component specifications rather than confirmed failures alone.

A Second Starter Problem Involves Water Exposure

The other two major campaigns cover a combined 57,787 vehicles and involve a different defect.

SAMR says recall S2026M0092V affects 57,423 domestically produced 5 Series sedans manufactured between December 11, 2017, and August 28, 2020. Recall S2026M0093V covers 364 imported 7 Series sedans produced between June 29, 2016, and January 18, 2018.

In these vehicles, the starter-motor relay may not have adequate waterproofing. If water enters the relay when the vehicle is exposed to water, electrical corrosion can develop and potentially lead to an internal short circuit.

As with the larger recall, an extreme failure can cause the starter to overheat and create a fire risk. BMW will replace the affected starter assemblies with improved units free of charge.

This campaign expands a previous recall announced on November 14, 2025. The fact that the two campaigns have different causes is important. BMW is not addressing a single universal starter defect across all affected vehicles. Instead, different components or design and production conditions have created separate risks.

The waterproofing issue also demonstrates how environmental exposure can interact with an electrical component. A starter relay may operate normally for years, but water intrusion can eventually cause corrosion and alter the electrical characteristics of the circuit.

For owners, the best course of action is to have the recall repair completed as soon as they receive notice rather than waiting for symptoms to appear. Since the remedy requires replacement parts, the work must be carried out by BMW dealers instead of being resolved through a warning reset or software update. According to SAMR, the recall campaigns are scheduled to begin on October 30, 2026.

BMW Also Recalls a Small Number of Vehicles Over Brake Software

The starter-motor campaigns account for almost the entire latest BMW recall action in China, but two additional campaigns affect another 218 vehicles.

SAMR says recall S2026M0094V covers 157 domestically produced X1, X5, and 5 Series vehicles manufactured between May 15, 2023, and April 30, 2024. Recall S2026M0095V covers 61 imported X2, X6, X7, 5 Series, 7 Series, and MINI John Cooper Works Countryman vehicles produced between July 6, 2022, and June 25, 2024.

These vehicles were previously involved in recall work but may have experienced an operational error or software download problem that prevented the required software from being installed correctly.

The software is designed to monitor potential problems with the integrated brake assist system, known as DSCi. If the monitoring system is not updated properly, the vehicle may fail to provide the expected warning messages if a problem develops.

BMW will therefore reinstall the required diagnostic software free of charge. The updated system can monitor the brake-assist system and provide a warning that directs the owner to return to a dealer if the component requires replacement.

Unlike the starter campaigns, these 218 vehicles are subject to recalls that take effect immediately.

The small brake-related campaigns show another aspect of modern recall management. A recall repair is not necessarily complete simply because a vehicle has visited a dealership. If software installation fails or a procedure is performed incorrectly, the manufacturer may need to conduct another campaign to ensure the original safety remedy was completed properly.

What the Expanded Recall Means for BMW Owners

The latest Chinese recall is significant because it combines a large number of vehicles with a component that can present a fire risk under specific conditions.

The affected BMWs span multiple model lines, vehicle generations, and production periods. That makes it particularly important for owners to check their individual vehicle identification number rather than assuming a model is automatically included or excluded.

BMW is expected to notify affected owners through registered mail and connected-vehicle messages. Owners can also contact BMW’s Chinese customer service channels for recall information.

The repairs are free of charge, and the starter-related campaigns call for improved replacement components. Owners should arrange the repair as soon as they receive a recall notice, particularly because starter problems can progress from an inconvenience into a potentially dangerous electrical failure.

The recall also highlights a wider challenge for premium automakers. BMW vehicles have become increasingly complex, with more electrical components and software systems controlling functions that once depended on simpler mechanical hardware.

That complexity can improve performance and convenience, but it can also create new failure modes.

The scale of the campaign also shows why regulators and automakers continue to expand recalls when additional vehicles are identified. The 93,071-vehicle campaign is specifically described by SAMR as an expansion of the March recall, while the 57,423- and 364-vehicle campaigns expand an earlier November 2025 action.

For BMW, replacing the affected starter motors and relays should remove the immediate hardware risk. The company will also have to ensure that owners complete the repairs across a large number of vehicles.

The latest action does not mean every recalled BMW is expected to catch fire. The regulator describes overheating and fire as an extreme-case possibility. Nevertheless, the potential severity is enough to justify replacing the affected components.

With more than 150,000 vehicles included in the starter-related campaigns, this is one of BMW’s more substantial recall actions in China this year. It also demonstrates how a relatively small component can become the focus of a major safety campaign when manufacturing, wear, and environmental conditions combine.

For affected owners, the safest approach is simple. Respond to the recall notice, arrange the free repair, and do not assume that starting problems are something that can be safely overlooked.
