Stellantis is recalling 201,976 Jeep vehicles in the United States because a software problem can prevent the tire-pressure monitoring system from detecting low tire pressure or illuminating the warning light. The campaign covers several Jeep SUVs from the 2024 through 2026 model years.

According to Reuters, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the malfunction increases crash risk because drivers may not receive the warning they are supposed to get when tire pressure falls below the required level. The defect also means affected vehicles do not comply with federal tire-pressure monitoring requirements.

The recall is notable because it does not involve a defective tire, wheel, or pressure sensor. Instead, software controlling the vehicle’s radio frequency hub can prevent the system from communicating the warning correctly.

Stellantis will address the issue through a software update at no cost to owners. The fix is relatively straightforward, but the safety function involved is important because tire pressure can change without producing an obvious symptom until a tire becomes dangerously underinflated.

A Software Problem Can Hide Low Tire Pressure

Tire-pressure monitoring systems give drivers an early warning when one or more tires lose pressure. Maintaining correct pressure is important for handling, braking, tire durability, and fuel economy.

In the affected Jeep vehicles, a software error can interfere with that warning function. Reuters reported that the system may fail either to detect low tire pressure or to illuminate the warning light on the instrument panel.

That creates a safety concern because a driver may continue driving without realizing that a tire has fallen below the recommended pressure. An underinflated tire can generate more heat and change vehicle handling. In severe cases, continued driving can contribute to tire failure.

The problem is also different from a conventional sensor failure. The recall centers on software associated with the radio frequency hub, meaning the physical tire and pressure-monitoring hardware may be functioning correctly while the vehicle fails to communicate the information to the driver.

Stellantis’ remedy is to update the radio frequency hub software. Dealers will perform the repair free of charge.

Because the fix is software-based, owners should not assume that a vehicle is unaffected simply because its tires currently appear properly inflated. The concern is whether the warning system will respond correctly if pressure falls later.

Drivers should continue checking tire pressures manually as recommended by the manufacturer, even after completing the recall repair. A properly functioning TPMS is an additional safety system, not a replacement for routine tire maintenance.

The issue can be particularly relevant during long highway trips. Tire pressure naturally changes with temperature, and a slow leak may not be immediately obvious from the driver’s seat. Without a functioning warning system, an owner could travel a considerable distance before noticing that something is wrong.

That is why the software defect deserves attention even though it does not directly damage the tire.

Which Jeep Models Are Affected?

The recall covers multiple Jeep models and model years. According to Reuters, affected vehicles include certain 2024-2025 Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wagoneer models, 2024-2026 Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee L, and Grand Wagoneer models, the 2025 Wagoneer L, the 2025-2026 Grand Wagoneer L, and the 2026 Jeep Cherokee.

The campaign does not mean every vehicle from these model years is included. Specific production configurations and vehicle identification numbers determine whether an individual vehicle falls within the recall population.

Stellantis identifies the campaign as recall 54D. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning September 29.

Owners can check their vehicle identification number through NHTSA’s recall system rather than waiting for a letter. The federal agency allows consumers to search for open safety recalls using a VIN.

The campaign’s size is especially notable because several affected vehicles are among Jeep’s larger SUVs. The Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer families serve different portions of the market, but all rely on electronic systems to provide information and warnings to drivers.

For owners, the important issue is not whether the vehicle currently displays a tire-pressure warning. A vehicle may operate normally when its tires are correctly inflated and still be affected by the software defect.

The risk emerges when tire pressure later falls, and the system fails to provide the expected warning.

Why Tire-Pressure Warnings Matter

Drivers sometimes treat a tire-pressure warning as a minor inconvenience, but the system exists because underinflation can affect several aspects of vehicle behavior.

A tire with insufficient pressure can increase rolling resistance and flex more as it rotates, creating additional heat. At higher speeds, excessive heat and structural stress can contribute to tire failure.

Underinflation can also affect handling. If one tire loses substantially more pressure than the others, the vehicle may respond differently during braking, cornering, or sudden evasive maneuvers.

The TPMS warning allows the driver to identify the problem before it becomes more serious.

Federal requirements are designed to ensure drivers receive that warning under specified conditions. Because the Jeep software defect can prevent the warning from appearing, NHTSA considers the vehicles noncompliant as well as potentially unsafe.

For Jeep owners, the remedy should be less disruptive than recalls involving major mechanical components. A dealer will update the radio frequency hub software, and the repair will be performed without charge.

Until the repair is completed, owners should be more proactive about checking tire pressure. A handheld gauge can confirm the actual pressure in each tire, while a visual inspection can help identify obvious damage or a tire that appears significantly lower than the others.

Those checks do not eliminate the need for the recall repair. They simply provide another way to detect a pressure problem while the vehicle’s warning system may not be reliable.

It is also worth remembering that tire pressure should be checked when the tires are cold and adjusted according to the pressure listed by the manufacturer, rather than the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. Keeping all four tires properly inflated helps maintain predictable handling while reducing unnecessary tire wear.

What Jeep Owners Should Do

Owners of affected vehicles should check whether their Jeep has an open recall and arrange the free software update once the repair is available.

NHTSA recommends using its recall lookup system to check a vehicle by VIN. Owners can also contact Stellantis or a Jeep dealer for campaign information.

There is no indication that drivers should immediately stop using their vehicles. The primary risk is that a driver may not receive a warning if a tire loses pressure.

Nevertheless, anyone who notices a tire-pressure warning, unusual handling, visible tire damage, or a tire that appears underinflated should stop and inspect the vehicle rather than assuming the monitoring system will provide sufficient protection.

After the software update is completed, the TPMS should be able to detect low pressure and provide the required warning.

The recall also highlights how software has become increasingly important to vehicle safety. A relatively simple software problem can prevent a federally required warning from reaching the driver, even when the underlying hardware is working correctly.

For Stellantis, the fix should be relatively simple because it does not require replacement of tires, wheels, or complete TPMS assemblies. For owners, however, the safety implication is more significant than the repair itself.

With 201,976 Jeep vehicles affected, Stellantis must ensure that owners receive the information and complete the remedy. For drivers, completing the software update and continuing routine tire-pressure checks are the best ways to ensure an important safety system remains available when it is needed.
