Toyota is recalling thousands of its new 2026 C-HR electric SUVs in North America after discovering a software problem that can cause the battery to become overcharged during regenerative braking. If the condition occurs, the electric drive system can shut down, potentially causing a sudden loss of propulsion and increasing the risk of a crash.

According to Car and Driver, Toyota’s recall covers approximately 10,000 C-HR EVs across North America. The vehicles are all from the 2026 model year, making this an especially notable issue for a model that has only recently entered the market.

Toyota’s Canadian recall notice confirms that approximately 1,310 vehicles are affected there. The U.S. campaign covers the remaining vehicles, while the C-HR is not sold in Mexico. The U.S. recall is identified as 26V570000, and Toyota’s internal campaign number is 26TA17.

The problem does not involve a defective battery cell or physical failure of the regenerative braking hardware. Instead, software controlling the battery’s charging behavior can allow overcharging when the battery already has a high state of charge.

Owners will need a software update to the Battery Electric Vehicle Electronic Control Unit. The recall comes as Toyota expands its battery-electric lineup in North America.

How Regenerative Braking Can Overcharge the Battery

Regenerative braking is one of the defining features of an electric vehicle. When the driver slows down, the electric motors can operate as generators, recovering some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy and sending it back into the battery.

The process improves efficiency because energy that would otherwise be lost as heat through conventional friction brakes can be recovered and stored. Toyota’s own C-HR information explains that regenerative braking uses the electric motors to recapture energy and return it to the drive battery.

However, the battery has a maximum usable state of charge. Once it is nearly full, the vehicle must carefully manage how much additional energy is sent into it. That is where the C-HR software problem becomes relevant.

Toyota says that under certain conditions, when the battery has a high level of charge, regenerative braking can cause the battery to become overcharged because of a programming error. If that happens, the electric drive system can shut down.

The problem is particularly concerning at higher speeds. Losing propulsion unexpectedly while traveling quickly can leave the driver with less ability to maintain speed, merge safely, or respond to surrounding traffic. Toyota therefore considers the condition a safety issue rather than a simple efficiency or charging problem.

The circumstances that can produce the problem are relatively specific. Information cited by Kelley Blue Book indicates the condition is more likely when the battery is nearly full, temperatures are low, and the vehicle spends an extended period in regenerative braking, such as while coasting down a long downhill stretch.

That combination does not mean every affected C-HR will experience a shutdown. It explains why the defect can exist without appearing during normal driving.

As an EV approaches full charge, software must carefully manage energy flowing between the motors and battery. Toyota has identified programming that does not adequately prevent the overcharge condition under the specified circumstances.

Nearly Every Early C-HR EV Could Be Covered

The size of the recall is significant relative to the C-HR EV’s short time on the market. Car and Driver notes that Toyota had sold 6,321 C-HRs in the United States through the end of August. With roughly 10,000 vehicles included across North America, the recall population could represent most of the C-HR EVs currently on the road in the region.

Toyota introduced the electric C-HR as part of a broader expansion that includes the updated bZ and the larger bZ Woodland. The model gives the company a smaller alternative to its larger electric SUVs and is intended to compete in a segment where buyers increasingly have more choices.

The recall therefore affects a large proportion of the vehicle’s early production rather than a small batch from an isolated manufacturing period.

Toyota has not indicated that the battery itself is unsafe. The problem is specifically tied to the software controlling the battery-electric vehicle system. Dealers will update the Battery Electric Vehicle Electronic Control Unit at no charge.

Toyota’s Canadian notice says owners will be notified by early November 2026. The U.S. recall documentation lists October 18 as the expected mailing date for owner notification. The timing allows owners to check their VIN and contact a Toyota dealer once the campaign becomes active.

Toyota has not instructed owners to stop driving the vehicles altogether, and there is no indication that every vehicle will experience the problem. Nevertheless, the potential loss of motive power can create a dangerous situation, particularly at higher speeds.

The recall also demonstrates how software can create safety problems in EVs without a physical component breaking. Electric vehicles depend on sophisticated control systems to coordinate battery charging, motor output, regenerative braking, and thermal management. An error in one software parameter can therefore affect multiple vehicle functions.

Toyota’s New EV Strategy Faces an Early Test

The timing is significant because Toyota has been expanding its battery-electric offerings after taking a cautious approach to EVs.

The C-HR EV is part of a broader 2026 expansion that includes the updated bZ and the larger bZ Woodland. Toyota is trying to build an electric lineup while continuing to emphasize hybrids as a major part of its global strategy.

The C-HR is particularly important because its combination of compact dimensions, SUV styling, and electric powertrain gives Toyota an opportunity to attract buyers who do not want a large EV.

Recent testing has also shown that the model can deliver strong efficiency and performance. Business Insider described it as Toyota’s most affordable all-wheel-drive EV in the U.S., with a starting price of $37,080 and an EPA-rated range of 273 miles for the relevant configuration.

That makes the software recall an unfortunate early setback for a model Toyota is using to strengthen its EV credentials.

Still, the nature of the remedy means Toyota can address the problem without replacing batteries or other major hardware. Once the updated software is installed, the system should be able to prevent the regenerative-braking condition that can lead to overcharging.

For owners, the practical advice is straightforward. Check the vehicle identification number, watch for the recall notice, and schedule the free software update once Toyota makes it available.

Until the repair is completed, drivers should be aware that the risk is associated with situations involving a high battery state of charge and prolonged regenerative braking.

Drivers who experience unexpected warnings, a loss of propulsion, or other abnormal behavior should contact Toyota or a dealer rather than continuing to operate the vehicle normally.

The recall also provides an important reminder about the changing nature of automotive safety. Traditional recalls often involve components such as brakes, airbags, steering systems, or suspension parts. Modern EVs can have equally important safety issues rooted in software.

The recall does not indicate that the C-HR EV or its battery pack is fundamentally unsafe. It concerns a specific programming error in regenerative-braking energy management, which Toyota is addressing through the control-unit update.

The recall will be closely watched because the C-HR EV is part of Toyota’s effort to expand its electric presence in North America.

The company will need to ensure that owners complete the software update quickly and that the fix prevents the issue from recurring.

The approximately 10,000 affected vehicles represent a substantial portion of the C-HR EVs currently in North American circulation. That makes this more than a minor campaign for Toyota’s newest electric SUV.

The good news is that the remedy does not require a battery replacement or major mechanical repair. A software update should address the underlying problem.

For C-HR EV owners, however, the reason for the recall is serious enough to warrant prompt action. A battery that becomes overcharged under specific conditions can cause the electric drive system to shut down, and losing propulsion at higher speeds is a safety risk Toyota cannot afford to overlook.
