Rivian has notably shortened its software testing cycle, rolling out the latest update to customer vehicles only two days after the beta phase commenced. The software update, dated 2024.07.02, introduces several enhancements, including preparation for upcoming Tesla Supercharger access and improvements in navigation and comfort.

Rivian stands out as one of the most active players in the automotive software domain, closely following Tesla.

Their over-the-air updates continually enhance vehicles, introduce new features, and address bugs, ensuring Rivian EVs remain relevant long after their initial delivery, unlike most traditional vehicles. However, while software updates offer significant advantages, they also pose risks, as evidenced by past incidents.

One notable mishap occurred last November when a rogue security certificate caused software issues, temporarily rendering many Rivian EVs unusable.

Although subsequent attempts to fix the issue initially exacerbated the problem, Rivian swiftly rectified the situation with another software update. Fortunately, such occurrences have been infrequent, with Rivian consistently delivering successful updates since then.

It appears Rivian has learned from past experiences, demonstrating increased proficiency in testing and deploying software updates.

Unlike the usual week-long internal testing period for new software versions, the 2024.07.02 update required only two days. The initial internal testing was begun on March 9, and the update was made available to customers by March 11.

This latest update brings long-awaited support for Tesla Superchargers, paving the way for Rivian vehicles to access Tesla’s charging network once implemented.

Under the NACS deal signed between Rivian and Tesla, which is expected to be operational by month-end, Rivian owners will soon be able to charge at Tesla Supercharger stations.

The update enhances Rivian’s navigation system, offering faster-rerouting guidance, improved route selection, and the ability to add up to 10 stops during route planning.

Other improvements included in the 2024.07.02 update enhance the entry and exit experience, ensuring consistent automatic adjustments of the seat and steering wheel upon vehicle entry.

Furthermore, the update addresses various infotainment issues, such as those related to Spotify and the Phone app, while also introducing several quality-of-life enhancements, including towing support in the trip planner feature.
