Recently, Google began rolling out Android Auto 11.8, yet, true to form, omitted a changelog, leaving users in the dark about its updates. Without downloading and dissecting the update, it’s impossible to discern its new features.

While Android Auto 11.8 initially appears unchanged, significant updates are lurking beneath the surface, though only accessible to a select few users for now. The promised overhaul of the Settings menu, long overdue and anticipated for years, has finally begun with the release of Android Auto 11.8.

However, the revamped appearance isn’t linked to the latest version; installing 11.8 won’t activate the new design. Instead, Google employs a server-controlled rollout, meaning some users will wait longer for the update.

The Settings screen now embraces the Material You design, consistent with the broader operating system. Notably, it now supports a dark theme, synchronizing with Android’s visual style for those in dark mode. Android Auto 11.8 is currently deploying globally via the Google Play Store, though the process may extend over several weeks.

Users can manually download and install version 11.8 using the standalone APK installer while awaiting the official rollout. Although Google has yet to formally announce the Settings screen redesign, it’s doubtful they’ll highlight this subtle update, considering its belated arrival years after the Android Auto redesign.

However, Google might address its Android Auto plans at the upcoming I/O developer event, where it typically reveals its strategy for key products. Android Auto and Android Automotive are pivotal for Google’s expansion into the automotive industry, particularly as competition intensifies following Apple’s commitment to CarPlay and Apple Maps post-Apple Car discontinuation.
