Tesla introduced the new Model 3 Performance on April 23, 2024, and advertised it for $52,990. But shortly after, the price rose to $53,990. Tesla often changes its prices suddenly, sometimes for the better, like with the Model S Plaid, which became cheaper over time. Now, just a few weeks later, the Model 3 Performance’s price has gone up again, reaching $54,990.

This increase has important effects, especially concerning the $7,500 tax credit for electric cars made in the US. Among the updated Model 3 lineup, only the Model 3 Performance qualifies for this credit. However, this latest price rise brings the Model 3 Performance close to the $55,000 limit set by the government. To get the $7,500 credit, you now need to buy a Model 3 Performance without any optional extras, limiting choices for buyers.

Even simple choices, like choosing the Ultra Red paint option for $2,000, can affect the price significantly. With this recent price adjustment, options for customization have become even narrower. Anything beyond the standard paint now puts the sedan above the eligibility threshold. Only a Stealth Grey Model 3 Performance with 20-inch Warp wheels qualifies for the credit.

The qualification for Full Self-Driving Capability, which costs $8,000, remains uncertain. It’s unclear whether this cost is included in the MSRP for the tax credit. Tesla’s pricing changes can be unpredictable, so waiting before buying a Model 3 Performance is risky. The price could drop again, but it could also rise further, potentially causing buyers to miss out on savings.
