Electric Toyota HiLux Ute Set To Hit Production By 2025

Exciting news emerges from Toyota as the automotive giant confirms its plans to introduce an electric version of its iconic HiLux ute. Noriaki Yamashita, president of Toyota Thailand, has announced that production of the electric HiLux is slated to commence before the end of 2025, marking a significant milestone in the Electric Ute Industry.

The revelation comes hot on the heels of Isuzu’s announcement regarding its own electric D-Max, signaling a burgeoning competition in the electric ute segment.

According to a report from Reuters, Toyota plans to kickstart the electric HiLux venture by deploying a fleet of twelve battery-powered units to the picturesque tourist town of Pattaya, Thailand. These units will serve as part of a trial program for public transportation, providing invaluable insights into the vehicle’s real-world performance and feasibility.

While specifics about the production model remain scarce, enthusiasts eagerly anticipate whether Toyota will offer the electric HiLux in the popular dual-cab configuration or opt for a single-cab variant akin to the HiLux Revo BEV Concept.

The HiLux Revo BEV Concept, revealed in December 2022, served as a precursor to Toyota’s electric ambitions, featuring a single-cab, long-tub 4×2 ute equipped with an electric motor mounted on the rear axle. While precise details regarding power outputs and battery capacity are yet to be disclosed, Toyota has hinted at an estimated range of around 200 kilometers.

Although Toyota is venturing into electric propulsion, the company remains committed to exploring diverse powertrain solutions. Adding to its foray into electric vehicles, Toyota has also revealed a hydrogen fuel-cell version of the HiLux, showcasing its dedication to offering a wide array of sustainable transportation options.

Furthermore, Toyota has introduced updates to the conventional HiLux lineup, including a 48V mild-hybrid variant of the renowned 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine. While the current HiLux does not offer a hybrid powertrain option, its counterpart in the North American market, the Tacoma, recently underwent a redesign, introducing hybrid capabilities and transitioning to the advanced TNGA-F platform.

As Toyota continues to innovate and diversify its lineup, the imminent arrival of the electric HiLux underscores the brand’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions, promising an exciting future for electric vehicles in the automotive industry.
