Despite these technological improvements, public confidence has not kept pace with industry progress. Many Americans remain hesitant to trust a vehicle that operates without direct human control, particularly after several high-profile crashes involving advanced driver-assistance systems.
A new AAA 2026 Automated Vehicle Survey, highlighted by Vehicle Lookup, illustrates just how cautious consumers remain. According to the survey, 61% of U.S. drivers say they are afraid to ride in a self-driving vehicle, while only 14% said they would trust riding in one.
Another 25% remain uncertain, indicating that a large portion of the public has yet to form a firm opinion. The survey also found a significant generational divide.
Fear was highest among drivers aged 65 and older, with 76% expressing concern, compared with 37% of Gen Z drivers. The findings suggest that while autonomous technology continues to develop, earning consumer trust remains one of the industry’s greatest challenges.

As autonomous ride-hailing services expand into more cities, consumer attitudes may gradually evolve, but for now skepticism remains widespread.

While the AAA survey highlights widespread public skepticism, it does not mean the automotive industry is slowing its investment in autonomous technology.
Instead, automakers and technology companies are focusing on improving safety, increasing transparency, and gradually introducing automated driving features rather than moving directly to fully driverless vehicles. The results suggest that earning consumer trust may be just as important as advancing the technology itself.

The survey also shows that education remains a significant challenge. Many consumers mistakenly believe today’s advanced driver-assistance systems are fully autonomous.
Despite rapid advancements in autonomous driving technology, most systems currently available to consumers are classified as SAE Level 2. These systems can assist with steering, acceleration, and braking but still require the driver to continuously monitor the driving environment and be prepared to intervene whenever necessary. By contrast, fully autonomous Level 4 and Level 5 vehicles remain largely confined to controlled testing environments and limited commercial applications, with widespread deployment still years away.
